I have to believe it is the work ethic of the newest generation of workers, but have noticed that the ability to be rude covers all ages and genres. I get so sick when the cashier, or the fast food window chick chooses an ugly, unhappy grimace over the polite, "How are you...hope you have a great day"!!! Even some exaggeration is better than the lack of...common curtisy...~SpaceCase
My sis works at Exxon and is a heckler, still better than being rude if you ask me :P |

New York postal service employees. A million times worse than any cashier. Although cashiers are bad the pale in comparison to postal workers. |

Sure. Everywhere the world over, you will run into rude, ignorant, mean spirited people. I guess the trick is to not let people like that suck the goodness out of you. |

Yes! This is a sore spot for me! About a month ago I was at the airport and inbetween flights. I ordered a chicken salad and before I was barely through with my sentence, the cashier snapped at me, "We are out of chicken salads!" I said, oh, ok then. I will have the club salad. She again snapped at me saying "I'm sorry ma'am but we are out of club salads." Me: "Oh, well what salads do you have today?" She said some kind of type that sounded gross so I just asked how they prepared their chicken breast and if they had something that wasnt fried. She answered me in an extremely loud voice and said that if I wanted chicken I would have to buy the whole sandwhich. I said that is fine. I dont mind paying for it but just not to be wasteful to go ahead and keep the break and pickles and onions and such. THEN SHE ROLLED HER EYES. And I was being nice. So I said in an equally loud voice as to embarass her, "I AM GLAD I DONT HATE MY JOB AS YOU DO!" and put my wallet back in my purse and bought my lunch somewhere else. When it comes to cashiers I am very patient. I know they put up with a lot of flack and mistreatment so I put forth the extra effort to be especially nice. But I am tired of them acting like they are doing me a favor to wait on me and I dont think that is fair. |

Some of the worse places in the States I have noticed rude counter help is Houston, Dallas, New Jersey, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston. Some of the nicest people I have met have been in San Antonio, most cities in Flordia, Amarillo, Mexico City (I know it isnt in the States but these people are so nice it is eerie), and in the north central states. |

One thing though, imagine how it would change if these people worked for tips. I bet you anything they would be kissing up to you. Take waitstaff for example. Pretend they made 7 bucks an hour instead of 2 something + tips. I bet their whole demeanor would change. I cant stand fakey nice waiters because I know they only want the tip. If cashiers or counter help for example depended on tips, it would be a different story. Think of all the nice people (salsemen, wait staff, salse clerks- anyone who depends on commision or tips) and they are your best friend. That is what drives me nuts. lol |

ITA about the postal workers...do you know that everyday my sweet boys say "Hi Mr. Mailman" (in the loud and ringing voice of Dennis the Menace) but he acts like he doesn't see or hear them. EVEN in front of me, and this just breaks my heart. How can I teach my chil;dren common curteousy if the ADULT jerk doesn't do his part??!! SpaceCase |

I find this is especially the case in big towns and cities...in rural shops it is less common. I think the worst thing is hwen they are talking to somebody else when they serve you! You are not alone in being annoyed by this!!!!! |

Space Case- that is so sad. That breaks my heart too. Adults need to lead by example. Simply saying "Hello!" is free. And Trekie is right- as a rule of thumb, the bigger the city, the ruder the workers seem to be. I have my own little theory on as to why, but I will keep that to myself. Sorry, NY Princess. I feel like I am butting in on your post! LOL! I feel so passionate about this kind of stuff though. |

well since you were once a cashier you must know how a seemingly good day can turn terrible with one customer, the one customer , that is demanding , and harsh and cruel , one of those customers that is callous with every word that comes out of their mouth ... imagine for one moment if the customer just minutes before you was that terrible customer for that cashier ........... i am sure that your thank you didnt mean much ( sad i know) ... why you may ask?? well because that cashier is still focused on how terribly rotten that other customer was just minutes before... and sadly negativity lasts longer than positivity! ............. sure some people that are cashiers shouldnt be .. simply because they are bad at the job , but speaking from my own personal experience , most people that i come across everyday in the resturant i work at are cruel , terribly mean , and overly demanding ........ those people take out every bit of positive energy i had when i walked in the door to work! and ya know some of my fellow employees are just as bad as those customers! |

Hi Danie, I understand what you are saying, and yes people can be very rude and put you in a bad mood. Working with the public isn't easy, but even when I wasn't in the best of moods if someone said thank you to my face, I would always respond. I think it's just common curtousy, and it was never so hard for me to just respond with a simple thank you...Lisa |

I understand your point Dani Darlin. I have worked in customer service and sometimes it seems as though the general public can be so stupid. But I never was overtly out-of-my-way rude to people. That kind of behaviour is uncalled for. I say if you don't like your job then find a new one. I know I did, I had to get out of customer service. |

I have a big mouth, and will tell everyone in my area to boycott the store... still too ticked off to phone the owner, but I WILL!!!!! Nuff is nuff!!! |
