About 1 1/2 years ago, I was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. I have since learned that heart disease is pretty rampid on my father's side of the family. Something I would not have learned without the records of my ancestors. My father, at 81, has been such a strong inspiration and driving force for me to live and do better. He loves that I am a member of "my church" and admires what he has seen the church do for me in my life. This past year, time has started to take a toll on his vigor and vitality and I see him rely on others more and more for answers and direction. No longer can he remember his great-grandparent's names. Him and my mother, who passed away in 1988 of cancer, always shared stories of their growing up years with us children. My oldest recently said, "genealogy is fine, but I want to hear the stories." So, now as I research and fill in the boxes I make sure that I add the stories I have heard or experienced first hand. Then, the names and dates come alive and become our family; not just a name and a date, but people that we love or learn to love.

Date: 5/11/2002 9:15:00 PM  From Authorid: 16845    funny you should post this I came home today to find my father had suddenly started one for HIS side of the family...we have on of moms dating back to the early 1600's but had never had one for dad...
Date: 5/11/2002 9:16:00 PM  From Authorid: 31255    I agree the best part of genealogy is the stories behind the people. I have been lucky to find many distant cousins who have filled in stories about my family which have been passed down the line. It really makes the family tree come to life.
Date: 5/11/2002 9:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 53836    I said a prayer for you. My uncle is deep into genealogy. I have barely scathed the top layers of my mother's side of the family, but have been able to learn some really neat things about myself during the research!
Date: 5/11/2002 11:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 49742    Great Idea! My grandma who is 89 decided to do that and thank goodness because we all have an idea about our ancestory which we didn't have or know before! Angelfollower
Date: 5/11/2005 4:17:00 AM  From Authorid: 28946    Oh, how wonderful Paula, that you are also writing the stories to go along with the geneology! That is what helps to make it real and to see what our ancestors felt and thought. That is most excellent, what you are doing!
Date: 5/11/2005 8:14:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53961    After reading my post over again I was reminded I need to do that more. So much to do - so little time and energy! We just do the best we can. Thanks all for stopping by!
Date: 6/21/2005 7:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 16376    I probably should do this...
