Slap bracelets, pogs, laser pointers- what was banned at your school? (<>..<>)Alien

"No pogs are allowed in school!" I remember those words comming from our teacher's mouth. We quickly hid the little cardboard circles in our pockets and pretended like they were never there. Part of the thrill of having them was that they were banned from the school. The forbidden toys we were not to bring on to school grounds ranged from trading cards, toy guns (and real ones), action figures, fireworks, laser pointers, toy handcuffs, yellow t-shirts and a whole list of odd things you would never even think someone would dare take to a learning environment. Most were short lived fads and trends, but others still are banned to this day.

When I had Garbage Pail Kids cards and stickers
I can remember in the 1st grade when slap braceletes were all the rage, of course I had a few cuffed around my wrist. There was a rumor that slapping one of the bracelets too hard could break the bones in your wrist. I find that hard to believe now knowing that all a slap bracelet is made of is a little piece of metal and cloth around it. Even though we weren't supposed to have them I can still remember the lovely sound that they made when they wrapped around your wrist.

As I mentioned earlier in this post most of us remember when pogs swept the nation. I was in the 3rd grade at the time. For awhile before they were banned we would hold pog tournaments in our school gym. We had special little mats we played on, special slammers to hit the pogs down with (my slammer featured "Curly" the skeleton from Goosebumps), pog cases, books on collector pogs and I think there was even a special magazine for pog lovers. This wasn't part of them being banned but here is a funny quote from the Simpsons "Look I got some cool pogs, ALF pogs, remember ALF? He's back in pog form," Millhouse.

When I was in the 7th grade a new trend was laser pointers. They came on keychains, on the end of pens, some were even shaped like spacecrafts and you could switch the laser to a heart, smiley face, and other different shapes. I was never lucky enough to own one of these novelties. Not only was it banned at my school they were also banned in my house. My mother forbid me from buying a laser pointer. The principal banned these when kids kept disrupting class pointing the light at the overhead projector and on the teachers.

Giga Pets or Tamogotchis, this fad didn't last that long. Little digital animal on keychains. You had to push buttons to feed them and wash them. I had one of these, I don't know why? One time mine started beeping in class and I didn't want to get it out of my backpack so I just let it beep until it stopped. These were banned because they made a lot of noise.

Back then it was toys now it is cell phones. I don't have a cell phone though. We are not allowed to have them in school mainly because of the ringing disrupting class, but teachers also want to have an upper hand over students. Teachers are allowed to carry them, but students are not.

I'm going to lump clothing into one big section. Of course everyone knows the usual clothing banned at school no drugs, curse words, or revealing clothes. But here are some odd things that have been banned at my school. 1) Pictures on t-shirts. Not even a harmless picture of a flower. 2) writing on the back of a t-shirt. No pictures and nothing on the back. T-shirts were just plain. 3) Shorts, for awhile there were no shorts allowed in school. This rule failed, so no we can wear them. 4) The color yellow. At my sister's school you can get in trouble for weaing that color. 5) Kids wearing the same outfit. No two kids can wear the same outfit. No playing "twin" for the day or you are suspected of being in a gang. 6) In high school we could have pictures again, but no shirts with bands on the front.

The latest is sort of funny. In one of my classes one year the teacher kept noticing the tv turning on and off all by itself. She just thought there was something wrong with the tv. Until one day she caught a boy with his sister's (or maybe even his own) Dear Diary. With the little electronic diary/organizer he could turn the tv on and off. So now the rule in that class is "No calculators, including Dear Diaries" LOL!

So what are some crazy things that have been banned or outlawed at your school?

Oh yeah and when I was in middle school the year that we could have pictures on our shirts they outlawed shirts with bands on them. No Marilyn Manson, TOOL, Bush, Pantera, Metallica, White Zombie, NIN, Smashing Pumpkins, or Nirvana shirts; everyday kids would get in trouble for this LOL! But what was weird is that you could wear George Straight or country t-shirts, just not rock or heavy metal t-shirts?

I think that's all. Erin-

Date: 5/10/2002 8:06:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 24732    Oh yeah Emi no trench coats are allowed at our school either. I'm pretty sure that has to do with the whole "trench coat mafia" though.

Date: 5/10/2002 8:14:00 PM  From Authorid: 26227    what you cant say seal??? Whats the deal with that? When I was in school I cant remember if anything was banned.
Date: 5/10/2002 8:16:00 PM  From Authorid: 38278    Why would anyone have pets in school? Anyway, the only thing really that was banned was walkmans.

Date: 5/10/2002 8:21:00 PM  From Authorid: 42519    My friend told me at the place he was at, it isnt a school, but kind of a delinquent home, but they couldnt wear shorts above the knees!!! LOL
Date: 5/10/2002 8:25:00 PM  From Authorid: 19460    well since i was in school in the eighties and early nineties, my story may not be as wowing as yours! We couldnt carry knives if the blades were over 5 inches in length, playing cards (some teachers would allow it though, like something to do after finals), smoking... the reason i added smoking is becuase once apon a time we had a smoking area at our High School. THen they gave us open campus so we could go across the street to smoke or dip. Now campus is closed... wonder why??? hmmm maybe becuase they couldnt make anyone go to classes? LOL
Date: 5/10/2002 8:26:00 PM  From Authorid: 49459    My school went through many phases. Nothing as major as the stuff listed here. For my senior year we all had to where plastic id tags that had our picture, name, address, and phone number on them. And cell phones and pagers were banned. Now, in college, you walk by and hear about twenty different telephone ringers in about two minutes. Lol!
Date: 5/10/2002 8:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 49459    Oh, and if you wore any "inappropriate" clothing you had to wear a special sweatshirt and sweatpants that said something stupid like "I love (the principals name)" or something like that.
Date: 5/10/2002 9:23:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 24732    I'm not sure what's up with banning the color yellow? But I'm not making this up, people have gotten in trouble at my sister's school for wearing plain yellow shirts. There might be something I don't know about like if a certain group of kids wore it or something. It's just strange.
Date: 5/10/2002 10:01:00 PM  From Authorid: 53326    What is wrong with yellow or simple pics like flowers?? And calculators? I'd fail! LOL! Why cant you say seal ... I dont know at my school I guess they are decently leniant. Shorts have to be 4 inches above the knee or less, no clothes that have violent or like drug or alcohol stuff on it, umm wild hair colors for white people (there are black girls with orange BRING orange weave but we cant have orange hair HUMPH) We cant have the basics like toys and such. I cnat think of anything too out there really. We cant have cell phones but we all do. Most the teachers dont care as long as we dont use them. One girls range TWICE in my Alg II class yesterday It was hilar. I carry mine EVERYWHERE but my has the vibrate feature so i have it on that almost always I love my cellie! Its a sprint PCS Flippy Phone !HEHEHEHE
Date: 5/10/2002 10:12:00 PM  From Authorid: 11348    Gigga pets!! I remember we had a pretty big craze with that stuff and those became outlawed and everyone had a fit because there was no one to babysit their pet all day while at school. I never got into those things.
Date: 5/10/2002 10:40:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 24732    LOL Like I said with the color yellow and the flower pics on the shirt it doesn't make sense. Those are the sort of nonsense rules that we have in our school. I think the principal is brain dead, this is not the only thing she has ever done wrong. And the deal with seal (hey that rhymed!) is an inside joke LOL.
Date: 5/12/2002 12:24:00 AM  From Authorid: 27121    Well let's see, where to start... when I was in elementary, marbles were banned because people stole each others marbles and wouldn't give them back, then it was pogs (same reason for marbles). After that, we had a Tamagochi(sp?) and Nano pet epidemic and the school decided that it was too much because everyone was paying more attention to their pet than school. Soon after that, Spice Girl pictures and accessories were banned because people were selling and paying money for them. Then Pokemon came out and EVERYONE had those playing cards. Soon fights broke out because people were loosing their cards after they lost a game or they were selling their cards off (just like the Spice Girl pictures). My younger sister told me that Yu-Gi-Oh playing cards are now banned because of the same reasons for Pokemon cards (this is only happening in my old elementary school) In my highschool, the only things that are pretty much banned are bandanas, cell phones, pagers and clothing that are inappropriate.
Date: 5/12/2002 7:21:00 AM  From Authorid: 52358    in my school we was not allowed to have cell phones or pagers because they was considered drug related**chic_unv**
Date: 5/12/2002 1:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 53326    Cell phones and pagers are drug related! You have creative/stupid school administration! LOL!
Date: 5/13/2002 3:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 9130    remember those T-shirts that said Club naked or Get Naked or something like that? those were banned from my school in high school... when I was in middle school for some reason there was a fad and everyone had yo-yo's and these furry ball thingys and they were both banned... I remember girls in my school couldn't were shirts that showed thier stomach or shorts that were any higher than a dollars length above thier knee...
Date: 5/13/2002 3:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 9130    we weren't allowed to have pagers or cell phones either,
Date: 5/13/2002 4:27:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 24732    At my brothers school they weren't allowed to bring Pokemon cards. Yo-yo's have been banned here before. Club Naked t-shirts LOL? Hmmm, I don't remember them? But I know I can't wear my Spuds McKenzie *The Original Party Animal* (the dog that advertised beer in the 80's) Budweiser t-shirt to school. We can't wear clothes having anything to do with drugs or alcohol. Although I once knew a kid who had a shirt with a German beer comapany logo on it.
Date: 5/19/2002 8:50:00 PM  From Authorid: 53326    Thats pitiful!
Date: 5/23/2002 5:24:00 PM  From Authorid: 49981    In elementar they banned Pokemon cards, beanie babies, Yo-Yos, Gel pens but noo the teacher used them. In Middle School we banned Personal Disc Player but people still use them, cell phones, some clothes, guns (even waterguns) and that's all I can think of.
