If you can believe in your religion, how come you can't believe in the supernatural?

If we had completely substantial evidence that there is one all-powerful and loving God up there who controls everything, as well as complete substantial evidence that all that supernatural stuff really and truly occurs (i.e. ghosts, ufo's, sixth senses and pyschic abilities.... etc.), there would be no room for skepticism on this earth. Agree? Disagree?

But the sad fact is we don't know, when it comes down to it, what of that stuff is real and what of it is false. When it comes to religions, the majority of the world is in agreement that some form of God does exist but the details of his existance are blurred between different relgions. How is it that we can all so openly worship something there is no true proof of, yet so many people remain skeptical of the supernatural things? Despite countless accounts of both of these things, the supernatural continually remains on the side of the disbelievers, while more people have solid faith in their religion.

My personal belief is that people have no reason to have faith in the supernatural. Many times, unless someone has had an account with it, people remain disbelievers of the supernatural and don't give it a second thought. Religion on the otherhand, while we may not know if it's true or not, gives people hope. Having faith gives people a common calm in dealing with the unknown and the afterlife.

But how can we have faith in this? How can we so openly believe in our religion and so adamantly disbelieve in things of the supernatural? Is it simply EASIER to believe one way over the other?

I'd like to hear your thoughts.

Date: 5/7/2002 9:25:00 PM  From Authorid: 39512    I think that it's if your a christain then you have moments w/ god & he comforts you and stuff and and you have a bible and church and so many people to talk to they have christain schools not ghost schools
Date: 5/7/2002 9:31:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 11348    I know that they're too completely different things... I would never suggest having a ghost school. You bring up a good point, but I just wonder how one is so much easier to believe than another.
Date: 5/7/2002 9:41:00 PM  From Authorid: 25390    well, I believe in both. I think, however, that faith can be a lot harder sometimes, especially when things get bad. But I know that I believe in both the same. Not practicing....but in that both are possible
Date: 5/7/2002 9:44:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 11348    Yeah I think a lot of people are like that, Odd. I kind of believe in the supernatural more than the religion idea, but I think religion is more widely accepted and I just wonder why. Thanks for your comment!
Date: 5/7/2002 10:19:00 PM  From Authorid: 16671    I know there is a supernatural state out there. I knew and experienced it before I found God and even more so after I found God. I dont know why some people cant believe that the things you have mentioned DO happen, and are REAL. Good post.
Date: 5/8/2002 12:50:00 AM  From Authorid: 32806    Most disregard the "super" natural simply because their religion tells them too.
Date: 5/8/2002 4:31:00 AM  From Authorid: 18527    I believe in both things. Who says Christians can't?
Date: 5/8/2002 6:23:00 AM  From Authorid: 48993    things that make you go hmmmmmmmmmmmmm: jesus walked on water , performed miracles, turned water into wine , fed 1000's with next to nothing ...... isnt that "supernatural?"...... i have christian based beliefs and i do believe in the supernatural, this is my opinion , but hey it does make ya think !
Date: 5/8/2002 9:11:00 AM  From Authorid: 26227    This is something to make you think about. hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, I dont know what to say to this.
Date: 5/8/2002 10:27:00 AM  From Authorid: 24430    I dont believe in religion, but I believe in the
supernatural. The supernatural gives nme something
other than religion to believe in. +++ Mel +++

Date: 5/8/2002 4:05:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 11348    Thanks for the replies everyone. I'm not necessarily saying that no one believes in both things... but I have known many people who will only believe one and refuse to believe the other. I just find it kind of strange... Ohhh well.
Date: 5/8/2002 11:58:00 PM  From Authorid: 37900    I think people believe in religion more readily than in the supernatural because they have control over religion; by definition, they have no control over the supernatural. I can create my own religion from the eclectic mix of worldwide ideas; with the supernatural, I have to take what is offered. IMO, religion without the supernatural is a dead body; how can one serve a god and disregard or prohibit any contact by that god with his/her adherents? Great post.
Date: 5/10/2002 4:23:00 PM  From Authorid: 53683    i grew up as a Baptist and I have read almost all of the bible. I have also searched for references on the super natural. There is nowhere that I have seen that sayes that there are not ufos and so on. Don't take my word for it because there may be a referance. Alot of people have to have something happen to them before they believe in it. I'm a very Godly person and weird stuff happens to me all the time. I'll tell some on and they think that I am nuts.
Date: 5/10/2002 5:26:00 PM  From Authorid: 24924    To discuss this question rationally, you have to distinguish between the words: SUPERNATURAL and PARANORMAL. Supernatural: implies that there are entities, god or gods, angels or demons.
Paranormal: ghosts, claims of ESP, Psychokinetic powers, UFO's, etc.

Date: 8/10/2002 8:33:00 PM  From Authorid: 16845    I personally believe in both.
