1) Yep, defeat of Maximilliano (french "emperor" appt. by Napoleon). Benito Juarez had him executed to set an example. The battle took place in the city of Puebla. Started by a priest who I believe was named Huerta... 2) It was mainly due to Napoleon refusing to support Maximillian. Also, the help of the USA. 3) True. Benito Juarez (then Mexican President) and Abe Lincoln were friends. They were very similar in their campaign policies - emancipation proclamation (Abe) and the land reforms (Juarez). 4) I don't remember but I believe this is true. Maximillian, their leader was shot by a firing squad which more or less ended the French reign in Mexico. 5) Not sure but I don't believe so. 6) Nope it was Puebla, a city about 2.5 hours SE of Mexico City 7) This is what they said atleast. Their inability to repay their debts allowed Napoleon an excuse to invade. 8) No it is not, at least not to the extent that we do here. It is a very Americanized holiday, celebrated much more here than there. Their Independence Day is actually the 16/17 of September when they defeated Spain. (5th of May is merely the defeat of the French). 9) 1867 This was one of my areas of specialization for my masters in Spanish. I will help you as much as I can - I have plenty of material for research on the answers I was totally unsure of. Best of Luck to you and ask my questions if you like. cheers, ![]() |

You are in one sense correct: The first battle ended in 1862 (May 5) but in 1864 the french set up a monarchy with Maximilian of Hapsburg (english spelling) crowned as Emporer. He was captured May 15 of 1967 and executed on June 19th. ![]() |

yes you're right about #9. The first battle was in 1862 then the french put Maximilian in place and he was executed in 1867 which put an end to the French Intervention completely. cheers, ![]() |

I just wanted to point out to JESET. The reason this is being discussed is because it's soon Cinco de Mayo. (MAY 5th). No discrimination intended. ![]() |
