Hey with it being the "Cinco de Mayo season" here's a quiz. It's true/false, if it's false, make it true. (Yeah it came from an asignment;>

1) This Mexican holday commemorates the defeat of the french army.

2) The mexican army was easily able to defeat the French due to advance training of the Mexican army and advanced weaponry.

3) Abe Lincoln supported the efforts of the Mexicab army by sending troops and weapons.

4) After the defeat of the French in this battle, the French withdrew completely from Mexico.

5) The French eventually defeated the Mexican army and ruled Mexico for approx 3 years.

6) The battle during which the French were defeated took place in Mexico city.

7) The French unitially invaded Mexico in order to reclaim the debt that the Mexican government owed.

8) Cinco de Mayo is celebrated throughout Mexico.

9) The battle of Puebla, the battle during which the French were defeated, took place in 1862.

Good luck, I'm trying to get the answers also so I may not have them right away! :)

Date: 5/5/2002 7:44:00 PM  From Authorid: 4887    Oh gosh how embarrasing lol.. I don't know any of the answers... only #8... i would have to say... it's no only celebrated throughout Mexico... it is celebrated by Mexicans... usually Mexicans that like to follow traditions like to make big parties and celebrate with all their friends
Date: 5/5/2002 7:51:00 PM  From Authorid: 13297    1) Yep, defeat of Maximilliano (french "emperor" appt. by Napoleon). Benito Juarez had him executed to set an example. The battle took place in the city of Puebla. Started by a priest who I believe was named Huerta...

2) It was mainly due to Napoleon refusing to support Maximillian. Also, the help of the USA.

3) True. Benito Juarez (then Mexican President) and Abe Lincoln were friends. They were very similar in their campaign policies - emancipation proclamation (Abe) and the land reforms (Juarez).

4) I don't remember but I believe this is true. Maximillian, their leader was shot by a firing squad which more or less ended the French reign in Mexico.

5) Not sure but I don't believe so.

6) Nope it was Puebla, a city about 2.5 hours SE of Mexico City

7) This is what they said atleast. Their inability to repay their debts allowed Napoleon an excuse to invade.

8) No it is not, at least not to the extent that we do here. It is a very Americanized holiday, celebrated much more here than there. Their Independence Day is actually the 16/17 of September when they defeated Spain. (5th of May is merely the defeat of the French).

9) 1867

This was one of my areas of specialization for my masters in Spanish. I will help you as much as I can - I have plenty of material for research on the answers I was totally unsure of. Best of Luck to you and ask my questions if you like. cheers,

Date: 5/5/2002 7:53:00 PM  From Authorid: 13297    oops. ask me questions (not my)... typo... cheers,
Date: 5/5/2002 7:54:00 PM  From Authorid: 13297    Correction: It was Father (Padre) Miguel Hidalgo (not Huerta).
Date: 5/5/2002 7:55:00 PM  From Authorid: 13297    Hidalgo rang the church bells for the battle of independence not Puebla (cinco de mayo). sorry for the confusion.
Date: 5/5/2002 7:57:00 PM  From Authorid: 39258    13297 is a genius lmao
Date: 5/5/2002 7:59:00 PM  From Authorid: 13297    You are in one sense correct: The first battle ended in 1862 (May 5) but in 1864 the french set up a monarchy with Maximilian of Hapsburg (english spelling) crowned as Emporer. He was captured May 15 of 1967 and executed on June 19th.
Date: 5/5/2002 8:03:00 PM  From Authorid: 13297    not a genius... just a lot of studying of mexican history and politics. Thanks though Telsha =) Also, Gyork, just some trivia for you... Benito Juarez btw was the first indigenous president (he was from the state of oaxaca and also studied while in the US in political exile.)
Date: 5/5/2002 8:05:00 PM  From Authorid: 47983    Ahh.. a Mexican quiz? why not Cuban.. Argentina.. Ecudor.. ughh just kidding I'm just real annoyed with people that think theres only Mexicans and Puerto Ricans out there!
Date: 5/5/2002 8:10:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 39343    Thanks so much Majic! But according to my souces number 9 is true..
Date: 5/5/2002 8:24:00 PM  From Authorid: 13297    yes you're right about #9. The first battle was in 1862 then the french put Maximilian in place and he was executed in 1867 which put an end to the French Intervention completely. cheers,
Date: 5/5/2002 9:25:00 PM  From Authorid: 46515    I just wanted to point out to JESET. The reason this is being discussed is because it's soon Cinco de Mayo. (MAY 5th). No discrimination intended.
