According to Ecclesiastes 9:5, "the dead know not any thing." Of what benefit is it to preach the gospel to someone who knows nothing and therefore can understand nothing? |

That whole chapter is for the evil, those non believers who were evil will still be nonbelievers and still know nothing just as you die not knowing everything you still will not know everything unless taught and willing to be taught. |

" The dead know not anything ?" This could only be referring to the "spiritually dead", because those people who have passed through "so-called" physical death are still very much alive and well. Posey |

I checked the meaning of the word "dead" in Strong's Exhaustive concordance. I found no indication that the word, as used in Ecclesiastes 9, meant anything but a carcass. If this is true, preaching to the dead (carcasses) seems a waste of time, as does baptism for the dead (carcasses), since the dead (carcasses) cannot hear and respond to the message. I hope this helps. |

I believe it is saying in 1 Pet 3:18-20 and 4:6 that when Jesus was resurrected He went to preach the gospel to those who had not had an opportunity to know God in times past(days of Noah).Jesus went in Spirit and preached to them so that all would have the same opportunity to life and all will be judged according to the gospel of Jesus..No one will have the excuse of not having a chance to life which Jesus gives. Since it is appointed unto man once to die and after that comes judgment, then those who are dead are judged when they die. The dead know nothing of what goes on among the living. After they are gone,no amount of praying will change the judgment they received when they left this earth. |
