Amazing-- to prove the possibility of his theory that Polynesia was populated by people from Peru rather than by people from Asia-- which was the commonly accepted theory-- he sailed from Peru to the Polynesia in 1947 on a *Balsa wood* raft. Experts believed that the raft would be waterlogged and sink within a matter of days, but he succeeded and went on to write a book about his journey, "Kon Tiki," which was later made into an oscar winning documentary. (He made several more expeditions in his life about which he also wrote books) All this from a guy who had never had a college education and was deathly afraid of the water. kind of makes you feel bad for being attached to the couch, huh?
