You can tell your Dad that I had something called Thyroid Carcinoma. In layman's terms, it's cancer of the thyroid. Mine had to be removed as well. It was discovered when my doctor examined a lump which popped up on my neck and just kept getting bigger and bigger. I didn't need any chemotherapy or radiation. The surgeon took his time and was able to remove all of the affected tissue and I have been fine ever since. I'm sure that he'll be just fine. Tell him to be prepared to take a tiny little pill every day for the rest of his life just like I have to do. That isn't such a hard thing.
