This may have been inspired by a Native American tradition of hanging birchbark cradles on tree branches. This source comes from Moms on Line. Another idea says that this is English in origin. The baby in question would be the son of King James II. The ominous wind brought William of Orange to the area. Wherever it comes from, if a baby could understand the words, it probably wouldn't be comforted much by the song! |

OMG yeah I've always thought about that...why would someone sing this song to their kid?!? LOL. And about what Becky said, Ring Around the Rosies is really sick..."ring around the rosies" was talking about the gross spots people got, and "pocket full of posies" meant the flowers people put in their pockets to cover up the smell of their rotting skin..."ashes, ashes, we all fall down"...they had to burn the bodies of people who caught the plague because it could still be spread even after the person died, and we all fall down meant everyone died!! How gross is that?? :P |
