Ok I have one. How do you know for certain that what you believe is true? Other than the fact you believe it is. I want to know WHY you believe... what makes your religion right over other religions to you? and this is not a question you can answer with scriptures. I'm always curious as to why people believe the way they believe and if you can, answer me without saying something like the bible tells me it's true or so on... because that doesn't tell me the real reason why. What powerful reason or powerful insight stands as proof for you?  |

Yes, without using scripture, please answer the question. Simply saying "because god says so, it's in the bible", doen't work to those who do not feel the bible is the only Holy Writ.TygerGirl |

This is funny because when I was a kid I always thought that when I got to heaven that I would take a notebook full of questions that I had to ask God. Isn't that silly...I still consider it though..eventhough I'm not so sure I would make it through the pearly gates anymore...  |

I was born into a Christian family, but I have been saved for only two years. I was raised in church, but as I was going to church when I was little I didn't understand church. I knew that I went because my parents made me. I remember singing Father Abraham, but never knew what it meant. I just liked doing the motions. I was like that with a lot of things. I never really paid attetion in church. To be honest, I didn't really care. I never really understood what being saved meant. I just never worried about it. I am a very apathetic person, and it's hard to get me to do anything. Although I didn't really care about religion I was a very moral person. I have to this day never smoked anything, taken any illegal drugs, drunk any alcohol, or gone any further than a kiss with a girl. I was raised in a Pentecostal church, and I remember always wanting to speak in tongues. I guess that was because that would give me the proof I needed to care. I still have never spoke in tongues. The church I go to doesn't believe you have to speak in tongues to be saved, and niether do I. Some churches actually teach that. I didn't even know that until sometime between this past fall and winter. Anyways, for a little while I believed in evolution. I am lazy, but I still like to learn. I watch a lot of the Discovery Channel, TLC, and the History Channel. They kind of emphasize evolution on those channels. (Maybe not so much on the History Channel) What they were saying made a lot of sense to me. Then one day my sister suggested I read Left Behind. (By the way my family never knew I believed in evolution. I never really expressed my opinions until I became a Christian) I decided to go on and read it since I had to do a book report anyway. As I was reading I felt like God was trying to speak to me. It was really confusing. I went about a week kind of ignoring it. I finally came to the conclusion that I would only believe in Christianity if I could find credible evidence to support it. I asked a friend if he knew of any good books that talked about the validity of the Bible. He said that I should buy New Evidence that Demands a Verdict by Josh McDowell. I went to a Christian store, but I didn't find it, so I bought The Signature of God; The Handwriting of God by Grant R. Jeffrey. I eventually bought the other book. They are both incredible. They give a great amount of evidence showing that we can trust today's manuscripts, and the teachings of Jesus Christ. I later bought more books. Today I have around 40 books that provides evidence that Christianity is the one true religion. I have debated college professors at Berkley, an author, and everyday people. I have never been told that I gave vague answers. Actually I have once now that I think of it. Some college kid would give me evidence for evolution, and then I would refute it. Instead of arguing what I said he would go through and correct my grammar. He only patronized me, and we never got anything accomplished. If you do anything....DON'T DO WHAT HE DID!!! It's so annoying and pointless. (Besides he always had more errors than me, so I always hit him back harder  Anyways I am accepting of everyone. Meaning, I don't think less of anyone that thinks differently than me. I may not agree with what they believe, but I still respect them as a person. I don't know if what I wrote is what you wanted, but I hope it is, because if it's not I wrote all this for nothing Well, thanks for waiting on me, and reading what I had to say. Interesting post Yeshmeshuan. In view of the known literary works by remowned theologians, religion scholars and other respected authors which clearly explain and detail many of the questionable aspects of the bible, I, personally don't wish to engage in a 'nit-picking' of details. The information is available for those who wish to seek it. There are problems in the bible, big problems. And they've been pointed out for centuries by the likes of Godfrey Higgins, Robert Taylor, Gerald Massey, Alvin Kuhn, Elaine Pagels, Karen Armstrong, Et Al. With all due respect, your efforts are admirable, but I just don't think anything you can offer in terms of explanation can change what has already been established about the bible's literary credibility. The problematic aspects and the explanations thereof are available for those who wish to know about them. However, in order to really understand them, we MUST venture outside the book to see the failings within it. It MUST be an objective look at the book and it's words with a large dose of common sense and logic, not blind faith. Perhaps, you'll help some to know God more closely by this method. Who knows. I too am a Christian,and the reason I believe the bible is true(1.I have faiht in it.I know thats not an answer.(2.So many people are changed by Christianity day after day.I may be wrong but I dont believe theres a great changing to Buhdism or muslim.(3My borhter is in boot camp at Parriss Island right now,and his fellow recruits say when they look at him at times they can see God in his face.He has lead many people there to see God.He has always been a pretty good Christian but didnt really read his bible alot,however when people ask him about something he might not even know the answer or where it is in the bible but he'l open to a page and its right there it just comes to him.(4.So many people become martyrs for God,you should get "Martyrs" its a book made by the band DCTalk.Its great.If something wasnt real how would so many people not be afraid to die for it?These are my thoguhts on how Christianity and God is real. |

Osiris, the books I have explain the objections that those theologians and scholars brought up. The debate doesn't end with them. They are a great deal of other people that have gone into further research, and found out things that those people didn't know. That is why I posted this. I posted this to show that there actually is proof outside of the Bible proving that it's real. If you would like to debate now, I'd be more than glad to. Thanks for your input. God bless

I ask that question a lot and you answered it nicely. A lot of times I've found that people will answer me with scriptures and that doesn't tell me anything at all and thank you for not doing that. I've also noticed that people tend to believe what they were brought up with without ever looking at other possibilities. I'm glad to know that you studied outside of Christianity and while I may believe differently than you, I'm glad you saw both sides and chose after seeing both sides, which side you'd like to believe. I just hate to see people preach how right their own religion is when they've never given any other belief a chance. |
