Can Good intentions prevail over horrible actions?

  Author:  11348  Category:(Debate) Created:(4/4/2002 9:24:00 PM)

The title really doesn't reflect what I'm trying to say... I'm having a hard time with the title. But think about it. Consider a religious cult. A lot of times they do more bad than good, taking the step of worship just a little too far. Yet every single one of these people does these things in the name of their religion. They whole heartedly believe they are doing right by their God or Gods or whatever they worship. I've heard of those mass suicides and all kinds of weird things coming from religious cults. When I think of these things, sometimes I have to ask myself if I am truly doing what is right, even though I feel I am. And if I'm not, will I suffer for that in the end?

Everything we do is with the knowledge of what we believe to be right or wrong. We usually know in our hearts if what we're doing is right or if what we're doing is wrong. But what if you truly believe you're doing things right, when in fact in the eyes of whatever greater power exists up there you're not doing right at all? Or even here? Some people go crazy and in their twisted vision of right and wrong they believe what they do to be right, when by society moral standards they are doing far from anything good or righteous. Hitler for example. He thought unifying the country by race and religions was a good thing, when we know it not to be at all. His intentions for his country were good... but he took the lives of many, many people.

And What if all of these wars we continually endure and participate in add to the downfall of the human race in the long run? What if what we know to be righteous... such as war, really isn't righteous at all? Will we be punished for our good intentions? If you think about it, are our true intentions truly good?

I think my question to you all is, Do good intentions prevail later in life or does the horrible act you create with good intentions prevail later? What do you think?

Date: 4/4/2002 9:32:00 PM  From Authorid: 32763    Dang! this is an interesting post with a lot to think about. IMO the religion thing is..if you truely believe in your heart that you are doing right, then the power that be will agree. I mean, you really, really believed that you did right. as far as the insane thinking they are doing right....well, i don't know how i feel about that one. and the war thing...stumped on that one too. good post and thanks for making me think. i will hang around to see how others reply.
Date: 4/4/2002 9:35:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 11348    Guy... I'm not sure you really answered my question. I say all of these things with acceptance of every religion. I want to know what everyone thinks in regaurd to their own personal beliefs. And Babie Bec, thanks for replying and I'm glad I made you think too. lol
Date: 4/4/2002 10:12:00 PM  From Authorid: 35629    Boy ya sure have me thinking now and it is really too late for that.I myself try to think if i am hurting someone or something i am doing wrong. Now as for the wars and all it just can not be wrong to free the world of terrorists and such that is for the greater good of all mankind.Of course they feel what they are doing is also. But thier idea of good crams all thier beliefs and practices down everyones throat and ours does not.Hmmmmm well that is all i have to say about that.lol I am so lost please i want to go to bed and my vampire children will not.help me
Date: 4/4/2002 10:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 47699    I could plant a bomb in the Vatican right under the Pope's bed and claim that I was only trying to save his soul. That doesn't make it right or justified in any way. Religious cults are all a crock of bull to me. I know my beliefs and I'm secure enough in them that I don't need anyone knocking on my door to try to coerce me into seeing things their way.

Date: 4/4/2002 11:26:00 PM  From Authorid: 30477    No, I don't think that certain actions can be justified by good intentions. In fact, not many things can.
Date: 4/5/2002 4:32:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 11348    NIghtmare gal, I agree with what you're saying but I just have to wonder if the greater good is really and truly the greater good when it involves hurting innocent people in the first place you know? And Frankenstein, I completely agree with the relgious cults being a crock. But I do think that outside of our beliefs, do we ever really know what's truly right or wrong? If good intentions don't prevail then we could very well be punished later no matter what you may believe for bad things we did with good intentions, as Jeffs Floating Head suggests. By the way Frankenstein I was wondering, does you name represent the monster frankenstein or the mad scientist who created him? Thanks for replying you guys.
Date: 4/5/2002 5:14:00 PM  From Authorid: 49021    I believe that karma will prevail over all. No matter if you did something in good intentions or not if it affected someone in an adverse manner then the repricussions will be felt by you in some way sometime in your life. Bad is bad. Regardless your intentions.Staindglass
Date: 4/5/2002 9:02:00 PM  From Authorid: 35629    I understand what you are saying it can be a bit unnerving to not know for sure ya just have to be what frankenstien said secure in your faith.
Date: 4/6/2002 2:15:00 PM  From Authorid: 50435    I feel that anything that harms another individual in any reasonable way is not to be considered "for their own good". The bottom line is you can worship and believe what you like but the basic underlying tones of all world religions is the "do unto others" principle. It predates the Bible so I'm not tooting a horn for Christianity here. I DO, however, feel that it's one principle to live by. And to add a point to your post, if I may: Is it not a great sin to do a selfish act(suicide bombings, ethnic cleansing, mass murder of people of contradicting faiths) on behalf of your beliefs and claim it to be in the name of your God? Take care and have fun...Gallytuck.
