AWARDS FOR SALE! WHAT A SCAM!

  Author:  8820  Category:(Interesting) Created:(4/25/2002 12:29:00 PM)
This post has been Viewed (2072 times)

This is the reply letter I sent to POETRY.com after they tried to SELL me an award. I copied and pasted the letter they sent me to the bottom so you you all could see what a BLATANT SCAM these people are running. Be Smart and DON'T Fall for this CRAP! I'd Love to know how you feel about this. If you don't want to read the whole thing at least scroll down to the asterisks***** to see where they didn't even have a poem to award me for.

Dear Lisa Thomas(whoever YOU are),

Can you please tell me "HOW STUPID DO YOU THINK I AM?" If my little poem was that great, shouldn't YOU be PAYING ME? And shouldn't you know which poem you are awarding me for? Are you aware of the reputation you have as rip-off artists? Do you care? Or are you just happy to scam the poor ignorant saps who fall for this CRAP and I'm sure there are some poor depressed souls who DO send you money to make them happy thinking someone really appreciates their talent. SUCKERS! Even the people on my favorite website are talking TRASH and Your name came up, Over and Over and Over. GIVE IT UP! I will NOT pay you to put my poem in a coffee table book, I will NOT pay you to put in on a CD and I certainly won't PAY YOU to SELL ME an Award of any kind. I do not need you thieves to make me feel good about myself or proud of who I am or what I've written. You didn't even have a poem picked out to award me for. What a bunch of loosers.

I entered your contest thinking you were a legitimate organization. You are probably one person sitting behind a key board who figured out how to create a website and make some money off of people who would fall for your scam. Well, You aren't getting my money pal, and I will e-mail everyone this letter so they can have a heads up on what you are trying to pull. I would also appreciate it if you would not send me any more of this ridiculous propaganda. Rebecca Wallis Abbott

----- Original Message ----- From: Lisa Thomas To: [email protected] Sent: Tuesday, February 19, 2002 12:02 PM Subject: Sorry you won't be with us

February 15, 2002

Dear Rebecca,

I’m sorry you will be unable to join us at the 2002 International Society of Poets Spring Convention and Symposium in Orlando, Florida--the largest and most prestigious poetry event ever held. As you know, you were selected to be honored at this event, and we were looking forward to your presenting your poetic artistry in front of the more than 1800 poets from over 50 countries who will be attending.

However, because we don’t want you to miss out on this unique opportunity altogether, we have arranged a way for you and your poetic accomplishments to be a part of this event in a major way, without your actually being present. Although you will be unable to participate in the Convention contest (you must be present to win), you can receive all of the awards we have scheduled for you--including your custom engraved International Poet of Merit Silver Award Bowl (see it here), your bronze Commemorative Award Medallion, and your Honorary Membership into the International Society of Poets for 2002-2003--if you will allow us to present one of your poems at the convention in your place.

We have arranged for professional poetry reader Alan Rose to read your poem at this largest gathering of poets in history. Mr. Rose’s dramatic baritone voice and imaginative style will give your poetry a dynamic flair, as well as the worldwide exposure and recognition that it deserves. Your poem will also be featured in printed form, proudly displayed in a special room at the convention that will be accessible to over 1800 attending poets and guests.

And let me tell you a little about the actual awards that you will receive by mail immediately after you confirm your participation in this prestigious event by submitting your poem:

-- Your International Poet of Merit Silver Award Bowl
-- Your bronze Commemorative Award Medallion

-- And your Honorary Membership into the International Society of Poets for 2002-2003

***** Rebecca, all that’s required for us to immediately send you all of these awards is for you to submit a poem to be formally presented at the convention. Additionally, we must also ask you for the necessary funds ($169.00) to cover the costs of the time and effort required to present your poem before the convention attendees both aloud and in writing, as well as the costs incurred in insuring and shipping to you these extremely bulky and heavy awards.

Rebecca, we are ultimately, of course, most interested in meeting you and having you personally present your artistry in front of the thousands of other poets who attend these live events. Unfortunately, this is not to be the case at this time, so we’re trying to do the next best thing. But we sincerely hope to personally present you with your most deserved awards in the future.

Sincerely, Lisa Thomas Convention Awards Chairperson

P.S. Your International Poet of Merit Award and bronze Commemorative Award Medallion will be shipped to you by United States Priority mail and will be accompanied by a 100% money-back guarantee of your complete satisfaction. If for any reason you’re not 100% delighted with your awards, simply return them any time within 60 days of receipt for a full refund, no questions asked.

Submit your poem here and receive your awards or go to http://www.poetry.com/poetscorner/absenteeorder.asp?VIP=P3664652&fn=Rebecca& ln=Abbott.

If you no longer wish us to notify you of poetic events that we believe may be of interest to you, please click here, or go to http://www.poetry.com/nl/stopemail.asp.

How it changed my life:

Made me see that I need to do something about these people. Please urge all poets to read this. My God Daughter was sent this same form letter. Don't give them any Money!!!!!!!!!

Daughter called me sOOOO excited that she was going
to be published. She is a serious writer and was
so hopeful of a career in writing. I just write
for fun and very rarely. I can handle my self as
you can see but, children are some times easily
taken advantage of and I want to see it stopped.
Thanks for your replies! Peace and Love,

Date: 2/23/2002 9:37:00 AM  From Authorid: 9130    SCAM!!!!! It makes me sad to think that you KNOW there are people out there that fell for this lie...
Date: 2/23/2002 9:57:00 AM  From Authorid: 31255    awww I have heard nothing but bad news about this site. It's really sad and I am glad you posted this so others will see and realize that it's a waste of time. *hugs*
Date: 2/23/2002 11:43:00 AM  From Authorid: 23207    I received the exact same letter/e-mail...Not sure which but they want me to pay them $170 for the silver bowl...Yeah right..I won't buy their book what makes them think I am going to buy some bowl??? They are such a scam. Thank you for sharing this with others that may not have known.
Date: 2/23/2002 12:05:00 PM  From Authorid: 46704    Yep, it's a complete scam!
Date: 4/24/2002 10:04:00 PM  From Authorid: 998    It is so sad that they perpetrate these kinds of fraud on innocent people. We have been aware of this company, and dozens of their subsidiaries. All with exactly the same motives ... to get your money. It is fraud, and nothing less. Radman posted a story about this quite sometime ago too, so that our guests here would be aware.
Date: 4/24/2002 10:10:00 PM  From Authorid: 18870    YEs I used to post on the site, but I never thought anything about it and I never sent them money, they never asked for it.. I stoped posting there when i found out they take your poems and say they are their own.. although my aunt got a publishing contract through them and they made some books for her and paid her money...so Im going umm okay, and I told her to stay away from there but she wouldnt listen, If you do want to post poems and enter a contest to go FamousPoets.com.. My frend Jay told me about that site and they are legit, If they dont like your poem, they tell you.... *huggles n love*
Date: 4/24/2002 10:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 277    My husband received a letter in the mail from poetry.com saying they wanted his poem on a cd put to music. It was free. All they needed was his signature. We won't be buying the cd though. They didn't even ask. They also invited him to that ceremony thing too. But, no cost was mentioned. We won't be attending that either. It doesn't seem like poetry.com Maybe they like my husband better than you or your poetry is just better than his! LOL!
Date: 4/24/2002 10:14:00 PM  From Authorid: 10534    good email to them!! i hate those places...i wish there was an honest REAL poetry thing like that...id like to enter lol
Date: 4/24/2002 10:16:00 PM  From Authorid: 15033    I've got a stack of those letters starting from about 3 years ago. I started scoffing after the third one. No matter how many poems I entered, they all won me a place in the Florida awards ceremony and made me eligible to PAY THEM for all the fake stuff they offered. Another thing, I have seen poems almost identical to mine on other poetry sites where people have obviously copied them from their site. They have even had the gall to put a fake date on them as if they wrote it years earlier...man I must have been out of body reading minds long before I ever wrote my stuff. A contest where you pay them...and you're supposed to believe it was a contest? They need to get kicked to the curb...
Date: 4/24/2002 10:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 47865    That's one of the funniest things I've ever read. It would be interesting to find out if anyone has ever sent them any money (or would they be too embarassed to own up?) Best wishes
Date: 4/24/2002 10:24:00 PM  From Authorid: 18870    Aww Hawk soo Im not the only one who got letters that didnt ask for money???? hmmmmm thats just weird.....lol..ughhhh
Date: 4/24/2002 11:00:00 PM  From Authorid: 28848    I fell for this when I was about 16. I paid to have my poem published in there book "A Walk Through Paradise"...LoL! It cost $60!!!
Date: 4/24/2002 11:07:00 PM  From Authorid: 18870    Wow Release Me, did you even get a copy of the book?
Date: 4/24/2002 11:20:00 PM  From Authorid: 42945    a great post hun to warn others of this scam, good on you...hugs Zema xoxoxo
Date: 4/25/2002 12:08:00 AM  From Authorid: 14754    What a great post..
Date: 4/25/2002 12:25:00 AM  From Authorid: 50435    Just by putting in the cost/value of the awards should perk the ears of even the MOST gullable people. That's just crazy nonsense...lol. Take care and congratulations!!! You've won my Least Gullable Person award(value$1137)...lol...Gallytuck.
Date: 4/25/2002 12:25:00 AM  From Authorid: 36098    deja vu i read this before lol...we should ask ourselves, why is getting an award so important or satisfying? is our need for material things to show to others our accomplishments is that important. Appearantly, the scam artists hope so.
Date: 4/25/2002 12:39:00 AM  From Authorid: 24003    Uggh!! They did that crap to my mom too..and she was like..LOL!! I dont think sooo.
Date: 4/25/2002 1:19:00 AM  From Authorid: 45551    umm..yeah, i'll take one pulitzer, one nobel, and an NBA player of the year, to go please
Date: 4/25/2002 2:04:00 AM  From Authorid: 30229    Oh mannnnnnn, what a rip-off!!! They can afford to send you FREE gifts, but cant afford the LABOR to handle it and read it???? hahaha, I am glad you didnt fall for it..
Date: 4/25/2002 2:28:00 AM  From Authorid: 15157    Its terrible because I feel that this Poetry.com is a legal form of Scam! It should be stopped!
Date: 4/25/2002 3:15:00 AM  From Authorid: 52141    Is there such a thing as a professional poetry reader??? hrmmm that sounds a bit fishy to me Beware of the "Professional Poetry reader" ...I hope no one falls for that stupid stuff ~IcySparks
Date: 4/25/2002 3:19:00 AM  From Authorid: 33925    Yep they have sent me countless letters as well..I have only ever submitted ONE poem there..but they keep sending me letters for that one poem..I just trash them as soon as I get them...They are a joke as far as I am concerned and they should be stopped! xoxo
Date: 4/25/2002 3:22:00 AM  From Authorid: 52141    Lmao thats the thing to do Lady luck ehehe... =p
Date: 4/25/2002 4:30:00 AM  From Authorid: 24924    One upon a time, long long ago, a friend told me to go there and submit a poem. I took a look, and immediately figured it was a scam site.
Date: 4/25/2002 4:30:00 AM  From Authorid: 46486    I entered in the contest on poetry.com, but I have gotten my poem published, for free. I have also got put on a CD that someone will professionaly record it for me. I have heard a lot of things about poetry.com being a scam, but I haven't seen the scam yet. Keyword, YET. My fiance and I put a lot of work and heart and feelings in our poems, it'll suck if we get screwed over like that. Sorry that happened to your God Daughter.
Date: 4/25/2002 4:59:00 AM  From Authorid: 39107    Blah, they gave me a contract for getting published in a book, but i ripped it up......
Date: 4/25/2002 5:02:00 AM  From Authorid: 3648    It's a sad thing that's for sure...I get emails all the time such as this wanting money for my poems to be published....*sighs* as Hey Larry said
beware of those who seek a price....

Date: 4/25/2002 5:07:00 AM  From Authorid: 13046    My friend got a letter in the mail saying her peom was going to be published in their book and she could buy the book for 80$. But even if she doesn't buy it they are still going to publish it.
Date: 4/25/2002 5:09:00 AM  From Authorid: 13046    See, if your peom is really good then you get it published FREE but if they don't select your peom as the top they don't just throw your peom out but they try to see if you will PAY they for publishing it since the peom hadn't been choosen as the top ones.
Date: 4/25/2002 5:34:00 AM  From Authorid: 22852    I read the whole post and must say I am sorry they tried to scam you. Thank you for posting this as I am sure it will help others. Hugs
Date: 4/25/2002 6:04:00 AM  From Authorid: 25828    that does sound like a scam - and i love the letter you wrote back LOL
Date: 4/25/2002 6:09:00 AM  From Authorid: 49914    I totaly agree with you i would not send them any money. Thanks for the post.
Date: 4/25/2002 6:21:00 AM  From Authorid: 19092    I've seen several peeps here with multiple awards in their profiles, I wonder how much USM would charge for those??? I'd be willing to pay good money!!!! Come on, how much guys??? All except that Barney award, you couldn't give me one of those....
Date: 4/25/2002 6:25:00 AM  From Authorid: 35629    Sorry they did that to you.It just is too bad that these scams can not be punishable by law.
Date: 4/25/2002 6:54:00 AM  From Authorid: 15228    What a scam!! Great letter you sent ripping them apart. I hope they read it!!...
Date: 4/25/2002 7:03:00 AM  From Authorid: 50193    Poetry.com told me I was going to be in a book called "Letters of the Soul" which will be published this summer. They also told me they were going to professionally record my poem onto a 3-disk CD collection called "The Sound of Poetry". I re-ordered both of them; are you telling me I was scammed out of a lot of money? >Vampyre Gerbil<
Date: 4/25/2002 7:09:00 AM  From Authorid: 48525    I bet there are some actors who wish the Academy Awards subscribed to this policy of purchasing awards.I wonder what the qualifications are to BE a professional poetry reader? My guess would be that you can read and can speak (Illiterate {sp}mutes need not apply...).Thanks for the heads up on this one Dragon 714!
Date: 4/25/2002 7:18:00 AM  From Authorid: 47337    Uh huh been there done that!!!! Scam is right!
Date: 4/25/2002 7:33:00 AM  From Authorid: 49080    Every time I have entered a poem to them they have sent me something about them really loving my poem too. They do suck.
Date: 4/25/2002 7:37:00 AM  From Authorid: 49101    LOL, I know isn't this the DUMBEST thing you have EVER seen! It is almost as bad as the Publishers Clearing house!
Date: 4/25/2002 7:45:00 AM  From Authorid: 609    wooo great letter!! You know what gets me, and I mean no offence to any poets here, but I as a poet find it very hard to write a great peice in 20 lines and under. I know some people can. Not only that BUT if the convention is sooooo prestigious, how come we only hear about it from Poetry.com and no one else, its not in literiary circles, writting commmuinites....the poetry scam is the very same as the modeling scam. They make no gaurntees on anything BUT we have to fork out the cash.
Date: 4/25/2002 7:59:00 AM  From Authorid: 11251    I have a poem on that site. All they want is money. I get stuff in the mail from them all the time now wanting to sell me books, formal versions of my poem, etc. (oh and this was BEFORE I fixed all the typos in it...lol)
Date: 4/25/2002 8:10:00 AM  From Authorid: 42519    WOW.. that is a bunch of crap! Glad I dont write a lot of poetry or send it anywhere but here! Thanxs for posting.. Love ya tonz.
Date: 4/25/2002 8:16:00 AM  From Authorid: 48041    oh dear, I have entered that contest...hmmm...I won't again...thanks for the warning.....Trekkie.
Date: 4/25/2002 8:18:00 AM  From Authorid: 11251    I just went to poetry.com...i was trying to see how to gt my poem removed from there. they give you some number to call, but this is what i did instead...i logged in to edit my poem. i put scam in the title, unknown for th author (although they still put your name at the bottom, and wrote in the poetry part...get my poem off your site...now when i look up my name only that appears. lets see if they want to geive me an award for that...lol
Date: 4/25/2002 8:53:00 AM  From Authorid: 40530    Wow! How awful! I think that you should sue! I know I would if I could. It's awful what these people are doing! I can't belive it!
Date: 4/25/2002 9:12:00 AM  From Authorid: 49101    Hey, ya know, I'll bet that there are enuff of us around here tog et something done about those people. I mean they are obviously running a scam, and wsome unsuspecting writers, especially younger ones are getting suckered in. They advertise in the teen magazines and stuff, and some younger people may not understand what is going on... Really, I think we should all get together and try to do something aboutit...
Date: 4/25/2002 9:44:00 AM  From Authorid: 49765    you know it is rediculous if you have to pay for and award. if you pay for it than it isn't an award after all. Awards are supposed to be if you do something great and someone likes it enough to honor you with something. SUCH A SCAM!!! (Raintear)
Date: 4/25/2002 9:45:00 AM  From Authorid: 18527    Yuck! That sucks!
Date: 4/25/2002 9:54:00 AM  From Authorid: 25650    I got that too! I was so excited, and then I saw the $$$$$$$. Kinda didn't surprise me though. I have gotten stuff from all over the place about my poetry, and in the end, it all comes down to dollar signs...
Date: 4/25/2002 10:02:00 AM  From Authorid: 29928    I will own up...I sent them money. Actually I purchased one of their Anthologies, with a poem that I had written, published in it. It was great to see it in print. For me, it was just fun and I love having the book. They still publish your work, wether you buy the books or not. Hugs,
Date: 4/25/2002 10:22:00 AM  From Authorid: 42523    Wow, thanks for posting..
Date: 4/25/2002 10:29:00 AM  From Authorid: 49739    Thanks for the post and the warning. I've never had anything like that happen to be before and I'm not ready to start now. I'm glad to hear you didn't give them any of your money. HayKory22

I have to laugh when I look back at the letter
I sent to them in reply. I was really Fired up!
I'm sure the flame was shooting out of
somewhere other than my nose when I look back on it
LOLOLOLOL! Well I am Happy to report that I have not received anymore
letters or e-mails from them! I am eventually going to contact
consumers affairs in the city where they are listed to file a complaint.
when I get all of the info I will write a post for those of you are interested
in filing complaints as well! Peace and Love, Beckey aka

Date: 7/13/2003 10:36:00 AM  From Authorid: 25650    I got the same letter as well. I think it sucks that they get many aspiring poets' hopes up that they are achieveing their dream, when in reality the company is just looking for a quick buck...
