Playing Playstation Burned Games....are they Illegal??? HaqZombie

I recently was given several burned games for the playstation (PSX), and I asked how to play them on your system. Someone told me that you have to go out and buy either a mod chip that you install in your system, or a "boot-up" disk for it. I called out to our video game store, and I found that these are being sold there. Now, not knowing much about piracy and things, it got me wondering. Isn't this illegal? Is it piracy? I know that if I paid for them, it would be illegal, but is having them given to me the same? And another thing, how does the "boot-up" disk work? I just had some questions that needed to be vented. Answers, anybody???

Date: 2/22/2002 3:46:00 PM  From Authorid: 42325    If you don't own the original game for the playstation then Piracy rules apply... If you all ready have the game Then its cool... but then... nothing is illegal unless you get caught... so just don't get caught by any narcs or the po-po and ur good to go-go... = ) - CerebralAzzazzyn
Date: 2/22/2002 4:25:00 PM  From Authorid: 15693    its legal if you already own an original copy. other than that its illegal (even though everyone does it anyway) but the mod chip works by tricking the system into bypassing the search for a serial number or somethin like that burned within the disk. The boot up does the same only the disk loads it and not the mod chip.
Date: 2/22/2002 4:27:00 PM  From Authorid: 15693    btw, i have a mod chip, but just dont have it installed yet lol. I wanna get the boot up disk, because you could risk messing the PSX up if you try installing the mod chip yourself.
Date: 2/22/2002 4:42:00 PM  From Authorid: 32659    Yep, it's illegal. I think Morpheus, Kazaa, etc. is too, but try telling that to the 492,938 users on it right now. They're sharing nearly 8 million files.
Date: 2/22/2002 4:46:00 PM  From Authorid: 46704    I thought it was only illegal if someone was selling burned copies to make a profit. I could be wrong though.
Date: 2/22/2002 4:58:00 PM  From Authorid: 36967    You are allowed to make one copy for yourself, it has to be for your private use. That is legal to do.
Date: 2/23/2002 10:52:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 31997    Kool. I'm thinkin about gettin a boot-up disk for it, but here it's 30 bucks!!! How'z about a loan??? LOL
