Friends or not?

My ex and I decided to just become friends. But at school sometimes he'll see me, but won't say hi to me or he'll come up to me and give me a hug or tickle me. What's up with that? What does he really want us to be...not friends, friends, more than friends? ..It's almost like he doesn't know how to act around me anymore, but he tells me that it's not awkward at all for him.
