Iran issues new warning to U.S. February 9, 2002 Posted: 3:13 AM EST (0813 GMT) From Kasra Naji CNN

TEHRAN, Iran (CNN) -- A top Revolutionary Guards commander has warned that his forces will destroy Persian Gulf oil fields if the United States threatens Iran.

The deputy commander of the guards, Sardar Zolghadr, made the statement in an interview with an Iranian television channel, according to press reports here Saturday.

He said the oil fields in the region, which are the sources of energy for the United States, will be threatened because in the case of a U.S. attack on Iran, the country will not limit its defensive actions to within Iranian borders.

Top Iranian leaders have been warning the United States against taking military action in Iran. Iranians have been angry that U.S. President George W. Bush said Iran, along with Iraq and North Korea, was part of an "axis of evil" that supports terrorism.

Friday, the cleric who served as Iran's president for most of the second decade after the Islamic Revolution warned the United States that the Iranian people would rise to defend their country against any military action.

Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, speaking to congregants at the weekly Muslim Friday prayers, said Iran would turn into a "deep quagmire" for America.

"Iranians will not roll the red carpet for the U.S. If they do come, the only red that they will see will be the blood of the aggressors," Rafsanjani said.

Iran's supreme spiritual leader, Ayatollah Ali Khameini, said on Thursday that Iran would initiate no attacks but warned that any attack on Iran would spark a "resolute" response that "will make the aggressors regret their action."

Rafsanjani's successor, Mohammad Khatami, has called Bush's comments an "insult to the Iranian people."

Iranian leaders have called for a large anti-U.S. demonstration on Monday -- the anniversary of the Islamic Revolution -- to send a signal to Washington that Iranians are firmly behind their leaders in confronting any aggression.

Date: 2/9/2002 4:27:00 PM  From Authorid: 47296    I feel that if we attack Iran, we may bite off more than we can chew. They are probably the best armed of any of the Arab nations, reportedly exporting weaponry to other countries, and to the Palestinians. They also have the capability to lockdown the Strait of Hormuz if they wish. For years, they have had Chinese missles in their inventory, including the Silkworm set up in coastal batteries. They have also been developing their own missle delivery systems, and are capable of striking targets up to 500 miles from their borders. Although much of their Air Force is outdated American hardware, they have managed to keep much of it flying, and have modified weapons systems to use on those aircraft. They also still have numerous aircraft that came over from Iraq during the Gulf War. Iran has been quite busy since the Gulf War, modernizing it's military might. Do not sale them short. If we go against them, it will be on their territory, and among a populace where even the women fight. I would imagine that the threat to destroy oil fields is one they are fully capable of carrying out. ...<Warrior Spirit>
Date: 2/9/2002 5:43:00 PM  From Authorid: 46515    So what else is new? Iran and Iraq, especially, have been a boil on our butt for a long time. If this post is intended to elicit sympathy for the leaders of those countries... it doesn't. At least not from me. LYNDY AKA
Date: 2/9/2002 7:27:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 19173    UMM, sympathy no don't think so Lyndy, I'm American. Where did you ever get that this post was to elicit sympathy for Iran and Iraq? Did I mention anything of the sort for you to come up with that conclusion?
Date: 2/9/2002 7:32:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 19173    Warrior Spirt that's good info, and yes I also think they are very capable of destroying oil fields and I think they would just love to do it too.
Date: 2/9/2002 7:42:00 PM  From Authorid: 11528    This whole war on terror makes me sick. If the US was really concerned about terrorism they would be over in Zimbabwe right now saving lives. This is all about oil and keeping the weapons companies rich. With the billions being spent on this war effort, it would have been much cheaper just to buy the oil from non arab nations like Mexico, Venezuela and Norway. They dismantled the Taliban, they crushed the Al Queda, Osama is not in Afghanistan so bring the boys home. Iran has done nothing in years and years to anger the US why does the US now want to provoke them. Bye for now. Enki
Date: 2/9/2002 8:10:00 PM  From Authorid: 47296    Enki, you are right. It is all about oil, and one of those oil fields is in the Black Sea region. What is the cheapest and most effecient way to ship that oil? By pipeline through Afghanistan and Pakistan to loading facilities in the Indian Ocean. And yes, Iran has the capability of attacking the Black Sea fields also. ...<Warrior Spirit>
Date: 2/9/2002 8:18:00 PM  From Authorid: 11528    Hi Warrior Spirit. Yes I have known that this is all about the pipeline through Afghanistan since the beginning of this conflict. That is why I am so suspicious of the WTC attacks. So many unanswered questions and odd occurances just adds to my suspicions. I think the Oil Companies have hijacked the Govt. and are using the US Forces for thier own benefit. Bye for now. Enki
Date: 2/9/2002 8:25:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 19173    When you think about it, it's really sick that is this entire war may be over oil.
Date: 2/9/2002 8:30:00 PM  From Authorid: 11528    Hi Lisa, Well the two main antagonists in this war are Bush Jr. and Osama Bin Laden. Both families are very close to each other and thier business ties are well known. Both families are also Oil billionaires so I would say that Oil is the mein issue in this war. They needed a rason to go into Afghanistan and they got it. Who is behind it all is yet to be proved but Osama is the fall guy for the moment. What makes George Jr. happy is that they are now in Afghanistan and they get to build the pipeline and make billions more. Bye for now. Enki
Date: 2/10/2002 8:21:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 19173    Hi Enki, I've read about the Bush's and the Bin laden's business dealings. It seems they have been dealing with each other for years already. That in itself seems kind of shady to me.
