As someone who works in palliative care, with the terminally ill, I run into requests for assisted suicide all the time. TWO things change their minds in a hurry. One is adequate pain relief. The other is someone who will genuinely listen and care about what they are going through. I have NEVER had a patient making such a request, who doesn't at the end of the day say "Are YOU coming on shift tomorrow?" Especially if I've rounded up the medical staff and asked "Why is this person not getting their pain meds?"  |
