U.S not allowed to carry our flag at Olypic Ceremony?

I just read this over at Matt Drudge's site. It appears that the U.S Olypic committee requested to carry the U.S flag recovered at WTC during the opening ceremonies but were denied. Instead it will be raised next to the Olympic torch.

They were told that allowing the athletes to carry the flag would not be proper. An American IOC rep said that the U.S has to understand that even though it is the Host nation it is still a World event and we are a guest.

Well Ptttoeeey. If it was another country that it happened to and they wanted to carry a flag that had great signifcance to them I would say go for it but once again the U.S must not show any pride or else risk offending someone.

Date: 2/5/2002 9:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 36704    We are still allowed to fly our flag, just not that flag, and I agree with the decision. This is the Olympics, these people have trained for years. This is not about America or the 9-11 tragedy. This is the time for the athletes some of who have trained their entire lives to shine not for America to show it's patriotism...
Date: 2/5/2002 9:20:00 PM  From Authorid: 11528    Hi El Toro, Im not quite clear on this story. Are You saying that American athletes are forbidden from carrying any US Flag or just the one from the WTC. In any case I think that is a ridiculous decision. Obviously the commitee is trying to prevent the athletes from making a political statement with the recovered WTC flag, but they will still get the message across in some way. I say let them carry the WTC Flag in honour of those who perished in the disaster. Bye for now. Enki

Date: 2/5/2002 10:25:00 PM  From Authorid: 22628    no, I disagree. Just because the united states is hosting the olympics doesn't give us special treatment.
Date: 2/6/2002 3:51:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 27360    I always thought that the Olympics was a extension of patriotism. These athletes compete for self and country. Remember when those two South Africans, one black and one white ran side by side and lifted there flag up in unity, you tell me if that wasnt a political statement? But really who turned it into a political statement but the Olympic Committe itself.
