It was a cold dark tuesday evening. It was twenty-eight years ago. I was eight.
"Mijo...", My mom called from our kitchen. I almost didnt hear her. I was busy pushing a broken dime-store dumptruck along the linoleum floor. Making the vroom vroom sound kids make in their oh so real world of make-believe. But I heard her. I didnt even bother looking towards my brother, I knew she was calling me.
"Si, Mama, did you call me?
"Yes, mijo, I need you to throw the trash.
"Can I throw it tomorrow?" I hopefully asked. I knew by the look she gave me what her answer was.
After putting on my jacket I gather the corners of the trash bag, tied them into a knot and reluctanty headed toward the back door. I turned the worn door knob. I hesitated as long as I could. I knew my mom would soon yell out that I was letting all the heat out.
I slowly closed the door behind me. I left It ajar. As a safeguard. As protection. You see, I was scared of the dark. No, it was more like terrified of the Dark. The dark was when all the monsters came out. The dark was when the monsters lurked. And waited. Waited for eight year old kids to throw the trash.
The trash can was in the alley, past the tree, passed papa's tool shed. My heart raced. I kept my eyes straight ahead, If I didnt see the monsters hiding they wouldnt do anything. You see even monster have rules.
I was almost to the cut out drums that were used as dumpsters when I heard a noise. I pretended not to hear. But then thats when the bellow came out. Thats when the most nastiest monster of them all came out. The dreaded Trash Can Monster. He came at me. I quickly threw the trash bag at it but that only made it stronger. It knocked me over. I heard his laugh. I was scared. I quickly gather a hand full of dirt and in desperation threw it into what I though were its eyes. It screamed. I ran at him and grabbed on for dear life. I tried to shake me off but I only held on tighter. He must have tired out because just like that the fight went out of Him. I won.
I walked back towards the house. This time I looked around. This time the monsters looked away.
I went inside.
That was the last time I was scared of the dark.
