Why is my cat acting insane?

Earlier this evening, my cats (I have a male and a female, both fixed) were watching the goings-on outside through the screen door. Some neighbor's tom came over and was sitting on the sidewalk for a grand total of maybe thirty seconds before Mom shooed him away, but apparently this caused my male kitty to go crazy.

For about half an hour, even though the tom was far away and the door was closed, he sat their meowing and hissing at anyone who came close, hissing especially ferociously at my other cat, who hadn't done anything. Now, half an hour later, he's in the kitchen, sitting by a chair, staring at nothing, meowing as loud as I've ever heard him meow, and totally tensed up.

So what happened? And what can we do to get him to relax?

Date: 1/27/2002 8:30:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 19273    Yeah, but he's seen other cats before and never acted this crazy...hmm...
Date: 1/27/2002 8:30:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 19273    Yeah it is kinda sad.
Date: 1/27/2002 8:30:00 PM  From Authorid: 16845    hmmm poor kitty my guess is he's just being teritorial.....
Date: 1/27/2002 8:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 19685    well.. my cat was fixed and did the same thing! for one, he was mad because of the whole territorial thing! but did his meows sound funny? he was probably just doing that weird horny meow (can i say that???) even though he's fixed, they'll still get in "the mood" but won't spray on things like they normally would. i'm not an expert on animals.. just what it seems to be to me.
Date: 1/27/2002 8:37:00 PM  From Authorid: 3125    He probably feels threaten by the other tom cat..He most likely wants out to "mark" his ground to let the other tom cat know that is his grounds and to stay away..
Date: 1/27/2002 8:56:00 PM  From Authorid: 29216    your male cat felt challenged by the tom invading his privacy, as for getting him to relax, the only thing I can suggest would be to leave him alone, and when you are around him, speek soft words of praise, He may not understand your words, but the tone of your voice will indicate that you are praising him. Most importantly DON'T PICK HIM UP!!! not till tomorrow evening. He'll let you know when he's ready again.
Date: 1/27/2002 9:10:00 PM  From Authorid: 48128    Ummm... Maybe that other cat sprayed your cats territory and well that could have upset the kitty I hope your cat gets better soon
Date: 1/28/2002 12:30:00 AM  From Authorid: 46515    I dom't know, cats are funny they are very territorial . My cat still isn't used to my Pomeranian and she's been here for months. She still hisses and gets ticked off when she comes near, or wants to play.A lot of times she just hides. LYNDY
Date: 2/5/2002 1:42:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 19273    UPDATE: he is totally fine now. He's back to his usual weird self; at least, he isn't hissing at Molly. The day after this he let me hold him and now he is exactly as he was before. Thanks for the responses.
Date: 2/5/2002 1:46:00 PM  From Authorid: 25828    mine do that when they see another cat..they're just really protective and jealous..my little baby was upset for a WEEK when i brought home a stray..and yes, when she gets riled..she will attack me, the other kittie that she's grown up with...anything that moves..i think it just gets them 'in the mood' to fight...
