Date: 1/27/2002 9:21:00 PM From Authorid: 3125 Hi Moreno..Joseph Smith was from a time when many taught that blacks were inferior to whites.. Because of their own arrogance, they believed that blacks were filthy and loathesome..In just this teaching alone would show that Joseph Smith was a false prophet..God would not consider someone He created as being filth,no matter what color of skin they were born with..In studying that religion,I see so very much that Joseph Smith taught to serve his own purpose..He also used misinterpreted passages from the KJV to further his own purpose..Regardless,that teaching disgusts me and to have actually taught that God is a respector of persons..Worse yet..People believed him and followed him.. |
Date: 1/27/2002 9:24:00 PM From Authorid: 47162 I'm not Mormon but let me give a little shot at some interpretation here. Dark and filthy may be an illusion to sin. Like my acts are dark and filthy. When it talks of people being white it may be an allusion to spiritual purity. Like, "Look the actions of that black man are white(pure) as snow!- I think that is what these kinds of verses are getting at. -r1 |

but r1, look at how they talk about the person's skin color. yes black can mean sin, but look how they talk about dark skinned people! ~~Alma 3:6 And the skins of the Lamanites were dark, according to the mark which was set upon their fathers, which was a curse upon them because of their transgression and their rebellion against their brethren, who consisted of Nephi, Jacob, and Joseph, and Sam, who were just and holy men~~~ This one says that dark skin is a CURSE!! I can see what you're talking about with some of the first ones, but others like this are just racsist! |
Date: 1/27/2002 9:48:00 PM From Authorid: 47162 bugs good point. I make a terrible mormon apologist :P -r1 |
Date: 1/27/2002 9:51:00 PM From Authorid: 47162 Bugs is the curse the dark skin or the mark? It seems to be talking about two things. Dark skin and some mark given to them. Mormons might argue the curse is the mark, not the dark skin? -r1 |
Date: 1/27/2002 9:57:00 PM From Authorid: 27554 It's saying that the mark given to loathsome, evil filthy, ugly people is dark skin! ~~Nephi 123 And it came to pass that I beheld, after they had dwindled in unbelief they became a dark, and loathsome, and a filthy people, full of idleness and all manner of abominations.~~ See??? |
Date: 1/27/2002 10:06:00 PM From Authorid: 27554 ~~Mormon 5:15 And also that the seed of this people may more fully believe his gospel, which shall go forth unto them from the Gentiles; for this people shall be scattered, and shall become a dark, a filthy, and a loathsome people, beyond the description of that which ever hath been amongst us, yea, even that which hath been among the Lamanites, and this because of their unbelief and idolatry. ~~ This is saying that people with dark skin are Godless and filthy! |
Date: 1/27/2002 10:10:00 PM From Authorid: 12341 I know nothing about this faith, however I interested in Rusure's and Firstborn's comments. They always have intelligent, well thought out responses. |
Date: 1/27/2002 11:13:00 PM From Authorid: 3125 Joseph Smith taught that black skin was a curse from God and anyone who mixed with those with black skin were cursed..Nephi 53 And cursed shall be the seed of him that mixeth with their seed, for they shall be cursed even with the same cursing. And the Lord spake it,and it was done.. How can anyone fall for this nonsense?? |
Date: 1/28/2002 1:43:00 AM From Authorid: 3125 He also taught that Native Americans were rude, unintelligent, and cursed by God..Joseph Smith seemed to have taught against all races except whites..Brigham Young also taught that the Jews were cursed, being dark skinned..He said he would have rather tried to convert the devil himself than to try to convert a Jew..He said "Leave them alone..The Lord does not require you to teach them, for they must suffer and be damned..Leave them to live and die in their sins and ignorance" He must have not realized that Jesus Himself was of a Jewish descent and He had pleaded for the forgiveness of the Jews who were responsible for His death..The scriptures teach us that all are acceptable unto God..Whosoever will.. |

no RI:: if you read the whole book of mormon and know the mormon history, its not meaning that at all, its meaning BLACKS, period!! The mormons believe that THEY ARE THE only branch of christians that will go on to be with the Father God. That the rest of us are inferrior and do not have the TRUTH of joe smith. They have taught before and I dont know if they still do, but one would have to check their doctrins and covenants, pearl of great price and their magazines, but they taught that the only way to get to heaven for a woman was to get the permission of Jesus, Joseph Smith and her husband. IF SHE didnt have that, SHE didnt go. |
Date: 1/28/2002 9:16:00 AM From Authorid: 31673 Have any of you people actually stepped foot in a Mormon Church? Obviously not. Where I live, the MAJORITY of the congregation is NOT white. These scriptures are taken out of context. You are equating the use of "White" and "Dark" with skin color, when that is not at all what it's talking about. In the future, please quote the entire Chapter so we can understand what principles are being taught. When I say someone is a shady person, does that mean I'm speaking about the color of their skin? Obviously not! I'm speaking of their behavior and disposition. If you read those scriptures and assume that they are referring to people of color, then that's just a reflection of you're own prejudice. When you look at a white towel or blanket, it appears clean and pure. When dunked in mud, it becomes dark and unclean. That's the same idea being taught here. People who sinned and immersed themselves in iniquity were called "dark" and "filthy". Those who were pure in heart and sought to do God's will were called "white" (being devoid of any stain or off color) and "fair" and "clean". Not referring to the color of their skin! As for the mark - God marked the Lamanites with a "darkness of skin" (what that "darkness" looked like we don't know) so that the Nephites - those who chose to do God's will - would know who their enemies were. The Lamanites were out for blood and wanted all the Nephites dead, God marked them, so the Nephites could protect themselves. And if you read, you'll see that the "mark" was later removed from them (but we still have dark skinned people, hmmm? maybe dark skin wasn't the "mark"?). So it no longer separates the righteous from the un-righteous. If the church was so racist, why is the vast majority of the Church's membership in Latin America and Africa? Certainly those people would not join a "racist" church. Gladys Knight is a "Mormon". She wouldn't be one if she felt the church was racist against her. Please, make sure you fully understand what you're talking about before you start defaming a group of people. Rusure - you make quite a few assertions about Joseph Smith. Where did you hear that stuff and are you sure it's the truth? I think maybe you mis-understood the man. FB - as usual you assert things about the Mormon Church that simply are not true. Only Mormons go to "heaven"? Hmmm. If you truly understand the "Mormon" church, you'd know that's not the case. Women have to have the permission of Joseph Smith and their husbands to go to "heaven"? Hmmm. I've been a member over 20 years and have NEVER heard that one before. Where do you get this stuff? |
Date: 1/28/2002 10:58:00 AM From Authorid: 16671 Then sweetie: I would think that being one for 20 years you might want to go back into the history of your own church and you will see that what we are saying is what old joe smith himself said. And yes, I have been in a mormon church, I was baptised into it when I was eight years old. So try looking up things about your own church doctrine and how much it has been changed so that even the members now dont have a clue as to what the early church was all about. If you dig really good, you will find that you probably dont want anything to do with it anymore. |

Date: 1/28/2002 7:20:00 PM From Authorid: 3125 Moreno..They have changed their teaching now..I do believe it was in the 70's a change was made because of disputes over racism..The "dark" Joseph Smith refered to was definitely refering to skin color, not of spiritual darkness..Joseph Smith taught that the blacks, with their skin color and their flat noses came through Cain..I will leave a few of his teachings regarding dark skinned people below.. |

Alma 3:6-9 6 And the skins* of the Lamanites were dark*, according to the *mark* which was set upon their fathers, which was a curse* upon them because of their transgression and their rebellion against their brethren, who consisted of Nephi,Jacob, and Joseph, and Sam,who were just and holy men.. 7 And their brethren sought to destroy them, therefore they were cursed, and the Lord God set a *mark* upon them, yea, upon Laman and Lemuel, and also the sons of Ishmael, and Ishmaelitish women.. 8 And this was done that their seed might be distinguished from the seed of their brethren, that thereby the Lord God might preserve his people, that they might not mix and believe in incorrect traditions which would prove their destruction.. 9 And it came to pass that whosoever did mingle his seed with that of the Lamanites did bring the same curse upon his seed.. 2 Ne. 51 21 And he had caused the cursing* to come upon them, yea, even a sore cursing, because of their iniquity. For behold, they had hardened their hearts against him, that they had become like unto a flint, wherefore,as they were white, and exceedingly fair and delightsome that they might not be enticing unto my people the Lord God did cause a skin* of blackness* to come upon them.. 3 Ne. 2:14-16. 5 And their curse* was taken from them, and their skin became white* like unto the Nephites.. Jacob 3 8 O my brethren,I fear that unless ye shall repent of your sins that their skins* will be whiter* than yours, when ye shall be brought with them before the throne of God.. In much of Joseph Smith's teachings,it is VERY obvious that he is refering to the color of skin, not spiritual darkness..Also there are many other teachings showing that Joseph Smith and those who had succeeded him were also refering to dark skin of Africans,Native Americans, and Jews).. |
