Taliban Fighters Now Take Orders From Women

GUANTANAMO BAY NAVAL BASE, CUBA----Detention Turns Tables On Taliban.

Taliban and al-Qaida fighters who forbade women to study or punished them if a veil slipped are getting orders from women guards and care from female doctors at the U.S. detention camp.

There are 130 women among the 1,300 U.S. military personnel at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, and they perform much the same duties as the men. Unarmed female guards watch over the orange-clad inmates; medical workers administer care to the sick or injured; and women escort prisoners to rest rooms and showers. The women are replaced by male guards when the inmates undress.

For the prisoners it is a world apart from Afghanistan where, until their recent ouster, the Taliban prohibited women from attending school and from working; punished them for wearing anything other than the all-encompassing burqa, and relegated them to a life without choices under a strict brand of Islam.

"Generally, when you're talking to the detainees, their eyes will tend to be in a downward position, they won't look at you, possibly because they see you as a woman.", says one female podiatrist, who has performed surgery on a few of the inmates.

Date: 1/27/2002 6:44:00 PM  From Authorid: 33978    Oh Man! I'd be so tempted to kick those nasty skanky butts if I were a guard! If I were a doctor performing the surgery....whoa...let's not go there! Ok, seriously, to show them that I am actually better than they, I'd actually be strict but somewhat nice. Being in the position they are in is a good start for their punishment and I agree with Jungabell....you can't beat that karma!

Date: 1/27/2002 7:23:00 PM  From Authorid: 3125    They are taught that from birth..It must be a very hard thing for them to suddenly be forced to face such a change which is in opposition to something they have been taught all their lives.. That is all they have known..Maybe now they will begin to treat women as human beings instead of treating them less than animals..
Date: 1/27/2002 7:55:00 PM  From Authorid: 30229    Good comment Rusure... I would hope so, but if they ever go back to their lives without war, they just may take it out on their women what they WANTED to do with the US women... I hope and pray it never happens...
Date: 1/27/2002 8:23:00 PM  From Authorid: 3125    You know Gail..That could very possible..The women has had a little taste of what it is like to think on their own and the men may feel threatened..I tend to think that this could be a step toward a better future for the women.. Usually once freedom is tasted,it isn't an easy thing to take away..Maybe to get carried away, but not taken away..Look back at our own history.. Women use to be treated very badly, now there is no way a woman will give up the things she has gained..I truly believe that some groups are getting carried away with women's rights, but women's rights won't ever be taken away..
Date: 2/5/2002 2:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 21435    Hiya Thinker. Hmpf. Well, in my opinion, these taliban creeps should lift up their eyes and be happy that they aren't looking down the muzzle of a .45. Just my opinion of course. Write on....
