I graduated from high school in 1983 and was married for the first time 3 months later. I was only 18 years old, but I thought I knew everything, as most young people do. My husband's name was Marc and he was three years older than me...21. We found this great little duplex apartment just outside the city limits of our town. We fell in love with it and rented it right away unfortunately we signed a 6-months lease on it also...we were to find out what a mistake that was real soon!!
Right after we began to move in our stuff...we noticed this smell. It hadn't been there when we looked at the place before, so we figured it was just something outside or whatever. It was kind of a thick rotten smell...like really old garbage that has been left in a warm place...like when you first open up the lid of a dumpster...only worse. We opened up all the windows and the smell went away shortly after.
The first night we slept on the floor in the livingroom. We had a waterbed but it was still freezing as the heater hadn't warmed the mattress yet. I had trouble sleeping it being a new place and with being on the floor & all. We went to bed around 11pm. and Marc was out right away. I kept hearing this kind of moaning sound followed by what sounded like splashing like water in the bathtub kinda. I finally got up to look around, and as I was going to the bathroom. I saw this girl...she was around my age in the doorway. Needless to say I freaked out! I tried to wake Marc up but it was like he was out cold. I went back to take another look, and there was nothing there.
I told him about it the next morning, and he couldn't believe it...he had dreams all night he said about a girl our age drowning in the tub in our apartment. He described the girl in his dream and it was the same girl I had seen. We thought we were both just too tired and you know we just blew it off.
About a month later...the same thing occured. And again the month after that. Also the garbage smell would also drift in and out...you never knew when it would come. Every now and then we'd comehome & find things like pictures had been moved to a different room. It was really bizzare but we thought we could handle it.
We finally asked our landlord if anything "bad" had ever happened there. It turns out that a young woman comitted suicide in the bathtub by cutting her wrists. She wasn't found for a few days and that accounted for the smell we encountered. This had all happened like 10 years in the past. The landlord told us then that he always had a hard time renting out that side of the duplex...which is why he requested the 6-month lease.
We were glad when out 6-months was up and we could get the heck out of there.
The Ironic thing is this...My niece was married in July of 2000. She and her new groom believe it or not-- rented the OTHER SIDE of the duplex I lived in. Evidently the ladie is still in residence...noone stays longer than six months. And their neighbors have told them something isn't right about the place next door. I guess one half of that duplex will always belong to that girl in the tub!
