I Just Couldn't Do That!

I should preface this by saying that I have nothing but the greatest respect for police officers, emergency medical technicians and firefighters. None of those, however, are jobs that I could do. I thank God that there are those who are willing and able to perform such valuable and necessary duties no matter how very unpleasant they may be at times. I have an Uncle who retired from the local fire department a few years ago. He told my Dad that shortly after he started in that position, they were called out to the scene of an accident,(well, it may not have actually been an accident but we will never know) and what he saw was horrifying and repulsive. At that location, the road forked and there was a big tree right in the middle of the fork. A car had plowed head-on into that tree at what must have been in excess of 100 MPH. He said that he just looked in the window and then he wasn't able to eat or sleep for two weeks or so. I once heard a story of how a woman and her kid had been walking down the side of a very busy highway here when they had been stricken by a vehicle which must have been traveling at a very high rate of speed. That is easy to imagine if you know how motorists tend to drive on that highway. Anyway, the kid was supposedly thrown into the air by the impact and came down on a road sign which decapitated it. Dad once told me that a man had been riding a motorcyle so fast when he lost control on a bridge here in town and that he had slid so far down the road that it had literally skinned him. A guy I went to school with had a brother who went out to go sled riding one night when there was a new snow on the ground. What he was unaware of was that at the bottom of the hill, a car had slid off the road and a truck with a winch was trying to pull it out with a steel cable which was stretched tight. Since it ws night time and so dark, he couldn't see the cable and thus didn't know to duck. He, too, was decapitated. I could go on and on and on here. If you want to read some more stuff like this, just check out some more of my submissions although the rest mostly deal with ghosts and unsolved murders. Anyway, my point is, I just don't see how anyone could go to work every day knowing that they may come across a situation like one of these? (I thank God that some can and do!) Does anyone have any imput here? Thanks in advance.

Date: 1/25/2002 8:50:00 PM  From Authorid: 47297    i feel the same way. i have the most respect for the people that do these jobs...because i know i couldn't handle it.
Date: 1/25/2002 9:18:00 PM  From Authorid: 38474    I did it because I truly care for people and wanted to serve and protect those who could not protect themselves. I love helping others and I felt becoming a cop would put me in a great position to do that. There are many different reasons a person decides to become a cop but it all comes down to a deep passion to help others. Yes, we see horrible things that weigh very heavy on us and sure some of us come home and cry because of what we saw that day but we still return the next day hoping to help another person. The worst incident I was ever involved in was when a drunk driver hit and killed a 6 year old child, THAT was ROUGH. I am not going to be graphic, but the funeral had to be closed casket. I came home and hugged my daughter for an hour. Something like that NEVER leaves you and I still remember and feel that mothers pain. That one call put my life in a totally new perspective. I have quit law enforcement due to health problems but I do miss it terribly. Thank you for this great post, it is nice to feel appreciated for what cops, medics, and firefighters do. hugs,
Date: 1/25/2002 9:45:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 47699    Bless your heart, Racquie! That was a very sweet post which came close to bringing me to tears. I'm so terribly sorry about your unfortunate health problems but you are the very type of person whom I am most grateful for in this world and I wish there could be more like you. I too love to help others and get a great satisfaction out of doing so, in fact, I almost feel compelled to do so. I'm just sorry that I don't have the, whatever it takes, to do you're previous job or anything similar. Take care and may God bless you.
Date: 1/25/2002 11:14:00 PM  From Authorid: 16705    some of the accidents were meant to happen, noone can change that but when you are going to go sleigh riding check out where and what is there. some of the accidents could have been avoided, don't you think so? i'm sorry for the ones who lost there lives because of someone else but the others shouldhave checked out what they were doing before they done it. Date: 1/27/2002 12:02:00 AM  From Authorid: 6050    One of my least favorite words..Decapitation..ugh!! makes me feel faint..gives me anxiety..I don't envy their job..but, i have the utmost respect for what they have to endure on a daily basis..thank you for posting..sometimes you blank reality out of ur mind for it's safeness..but, sometimes you also need to be reminded for that same reason.
Date: 1/27/2002 12:17:00 AM  From Authorid: 12341    All I can say is Bless those who give so much of themselves, like my Sis, Racquie, they deserve our heartfelt thanks and appreciation.
Date: 1/27/2002 8:04:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 47699    To me, they're all heros!
Date: 2/3/2002 10:16:00 AM  From Authorid: 8941    I agree. I couldn't do it either, and I am thankful for those that can. I have a friend who is a nurse who works in the pediatrics section of a hospital. Much of her time is spent with kids with cancer. That would be very hard for me. I couldn't be a doctor or nurse either.
Date: 2/8/2002 5:54:00 AM  From Authorid: 49354    I could never do anything like that! It's just so horrible some of the stuff they have to see.
