What Was the Point of the Witch Test?

In the distant past when supposed "witches" were persecuted and even put to death, there were so-called "tests." If a person was accused of being a witch, they would be bound and have a heavy object tied to them. They were then placed in a body of water. Here's the way the outcome was determined. If they floated, it was said to be proof that they were indeed a witch, so they were removed from the water and burned at the stake. If they sank and drowned, it "proved" that they were innocent of the accusations. Either, way, THEY LOST! My question is, what on Earth was the point of doing the stupid test since you're killing the person no matter what the results.

Date: 1/25/2002 7:39:00 PM  From Authorid: 47297    i didnt know this was how they tested. it does seem kind of pointless. whether innocent or guilty, they still die. if they are dead, does it matter if they pass or not? good point

Date: 1/25/2002 7:43:00 PM  From Authorid: 11528    The point was that they killed the person irregardless. It was a no-win situation for the person accused and it made the Christian church more feared. Fear has always been the principle tool of the church, along with guilt. Bye for now. Enki

Date: 1/25/2002 7:47:00 PM  From Authorid: 20069    yes it was really terrible..no matter what way they would lose
Date: 1/25/2002 7:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 18155    Considering the times, the paranoid behavior toward anyone thought to be a 'witch', the 'water test' or'dunking' were mild in comparison to other types of 'tests' created by the church and stste.Whether an accused 'witch' lived or died was hardly the point, to the authorities from the 1300s thru the 1700s in Eurpoe and America.
Date: 1/25/2002 10:51:00 PM  From Authorid: 27554    umm, that's the point. Those witch trials didn't make any sense. They were complety based on superstition. It was a crazy time.
Date: 1/25/2002 10:55:00 PM  From Authorid: 1631    Genocide never really makes sense...
Date: 1/26/2002 12:15:00 AM  From Authorid: 3125    Really..You would think that they would have been more "advanced" in their ways of thinking..Many innocent people died on the say so of those obviously "looney" girls? I have no idea how their method was suppose to prove anything..I wonder if perhaps they believed that God would take them if they were innocent, but if they were guilty, they would remain alive to be killed in a torturous way..That kind of illogical thinking is beyond my comprehension..It just does not make any sense..
Date: 1/26/2002 4:27:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 47699    Well, that sort of illogical thinking is just about the most logical explanation I've heard yet. I don't think I can come up with anything any better than that! Thanks for the input deer heart!
Date: 1/27/2002 12:15:00 AM  From Authorid: 6050    I'm with DeerHart on this..interesting
Date: 2/8/2002 5:52:00 AM  From Authorid: 49354    That was definitely a very stupid part of our history. I recently read an article that said back then, the Church got a certain amount of money for each witch it prosecuted so possibly that had something to do with it?
