Before the advent of camcorders, a friend and I got a video camera and a portable VCR and we decided to have some fun with it. One day, I printed out and laminated two fake i.d.'s and we pinned them to our sport jackets since we were wearing suits at the time. We then drove to a nearby big city which is about thirty minutes away and we sat drinking warm beer in a Chinese restaurant for a while. We had a shoulder bag which we filled with empty beer cans and a towel. A microphone cord was running out of it but it was only an illusion since the sounds we were to pick were actually recorded with the mike which was built-in on the camera. We finally headed downtown where there was a craft festival going on and we interviewed a lot of people who were there for the event as well as the ones who were just going about their daily routines. We were supposedly from a TV station in a state which I have never visited in my life. I was the cameraman and my buddy held the mike and talked to the people. We said that we were doing a show covering regional events. What a crock! We were just having some innocent fun! We went into a historic theatre which was being remodeled, a soup kitchen and a beauty shop, to name a few. We interviewed people on the street, the ones who had booths and displays and even some winos. They were the funniest and most memorable, as you might imagine. We even interviewed a cop at one point. We kept acting like we knew absolutely nothing about this area and we've actually lived here all of our lives. Every one of them fell for it hook, line and sinker! If you look and act like you know what you're doing and you're supposed to be where you are, you can get away with just about anything. We couldn't get a kid to come over there and talk to us once and we asked his brother what was wrong with him. He said that his sibling just didn't want to be on national TV. What he didn't know what that after we were done for the day, all we were going to do was go back to a mobile home, watch the tape and laugh our rear ends off!
