Man Nabbed in Jeter Scam A California man was called out in a failed double-play con that turned on the names of star Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter and his Red Sox counterpart, Nomar Garciaparra, authorities said yesterday. Impersonating Jeter and Garciaparra in e-mails, Herbert John Derungs of San Francisco persuaded the Original Maple Bat Co. of Ottawa, Canada, to send him 60 bats worth $3,319, emblazoned with the stars' names, federal prosecutors in San Jose, Calif. charged. Derungs then offered the bats for sale on e-Bay, claiming Garciaparra and Jeter had used them in games, authorities said. One victim allegedly traded $6,000, a Mark McGwire bat, and a Rogers Hornsby bat for 15 of the bogus bats.
