Welfare... RedRiot

I'm taking Political Science in school and we're learning about poverty right now. We watched a video in class that was all about welfare and the new laws. In some cases it was really sad and in other cases I was infuriated. A lady who had been on welfare for twenty years had, under the new laws, reached her max amount of help. She blamed the government for her misfortunes. She got a few jobs, but kept losing them because she kept calling in sick. "I don't like packing meat," or "I didn't like the buffet so I kept calling in sick. They cut my hours to ten hours a week after I didn't show up one day. And I quit because I can't live off of ten hours a week." So then she became homeless with her husband and seventeen year old daughter. Another girl was seventeen and she and her mother were on welfare. The girl had a baby and could not get help because she could not name the father. So then, she and her fourteen year old boyfriend PLANNED, I repeat, PLANNED to have a baby!!!! They did and oops, guess what! They had no money to take care of the baby. Well because of new child exclusion laws, the state could not help with this baby either. The girl talked about how hard it was to go to school and work 15 hours a week at Target. Now maybe I am being too harsh, but things like this make me so mad I just want to scream. If anyone else has another point of view, please feel free to share.

Date: 11/3/2001 2:18:00 PM  From Authorid: 7157    Things like that kinda make me mad but makes me REALLY angry is when someone goes on Welfare just so they don't have to get a job. My family was on welfare for a while but that was because my parents had low paying jobs. But as soon as my mom got out of college she got off of welfare. So I think that if you go on welfare it should be because you REALLY need that kind of help. Not because you don't want to get a job.
Date: 11/3/2001 3:46:00 PM  From Authorid: 45725    I live near a city where welfare is a "way of life." Certainly when I see welfare recipients in nice cars and fancy clothes, it makes me wonder?? These people are selling drugs. Its obvious. I was on aid for two years because i needed to be, when my case was closed, i thanked the people at the office up and down for their help. I didnt want to recieve assistance, but I surely would have sunk if it wasnt available. And I too, would be angered to see people who had nice things, in that office!! Single parenting is a balancing act and ones house should be in order before they have kids. I learned alot through those days of poverty. Im pro welfare reform and pro birth control. I think what women need more than anything is schooling, so they can provide for their children. Well, that my opinion from both sides of the fence.
