I've had it....and its scary. It's basically when your body is sleeping but your mind is awake. It cases no damage (that I know of) and it happens. I would only see a doctor if it happens frequently. Here is a good website on it. http://www.stanford.edu/~dement/paralysis.html |

Good thing you went to a doctor then...that's a lot! It only happened to me once and I was scared stiff! Maybe it's Narcolepsy? It's mentioned on the website. |

From what I've heard and read, sleep paralysis is quite common. I used to get it quite often, especially when I was under great stress or couldn't maintain normal sleep patterns. It can be very scary but unfortunately there isn't much of a medical explanation for it. Hopefully, it will be something that you will out-grow. Take a look at your life right now and do a little self-analysis... check your sleeping and eating habits. Some scientists feel that it is due to a blurp in the brain which doesn't allow the body to awake physically(causing the paralysis) but only the mind. Good luck. |

I have had Sleep Paralysis about 4 or 5 times. The way it happened to me is that I would be in bed , but not asleep yet. I would hear a rather loud "click" and I would feel my body starting to become paralysed. There is no way that one can move when this happens ( or at least, I couldn't!)I was very aware of what was happening to me and was not asleep! I was always able to see and hear and suddenly I knew someone was in the room with me. I thought this was my deceased husband and asked if that was him and he said , "Yes!" Sometimes he would lay down for a minute and then he was gone again! As soon as he left , I could move again. Some people who have this say they are very frightened, but I never was. I believe this is a spiritual experience rather than anything medical ! Sometimes when my husband would come, he would tell me things about the other world that I had never heard before! Also, anytime I had this happen to me, my husband was always there , and no one else! Perhaps the reason I wasn't afraid is because I am quite familiar with spirit. Love , Posey |

wow posey, that is crazy... i have also felt that it's somewhat of a spiritual experience and it has induced me to having obe's. although, this just happens to me too often and there are brain scans they can do to make sure you're alright. it's uncomomon to have something be medically wrong with you, but if it's severe there are medications they can give you to make them stop. well after i get all checked out, i'll let you guys know how it goes!! |

i have never had an obe, and i dont want one. but my good friend has experienced what he calls "being stuck in a dream". he says thats the only way he can describe it. hes not familiar with obes or anything else for that matter, however, he says that when it happens to him hes paralized. he thought his wife was on the phone walking around talking to her mom, but she was in the shower. he never said he left his body or anything like that, just that its really spooky and he dreads having another one cuz he knows he will. he said it happens every couple months....i told him maybe its a panic attact. It happened to me throughout my childhood. It scared the hell out of me. Unfortunately this is normal. As 6358 stated it's when yuor body is still in dream state and your mind isn't There was actually a special about it last year on 20/20. You're fine...I know it sucks but hopefully it'll pass like it did for me! Good luck (and tell your doctor to calm down)-Zano |
