I think for the most part... Born... that is MY opinion... I know that leaders can be trained, but the basic instinct can even be seen in small children... |

That's what I think too. You can always tell a leader early in life. But some of todays leaders were trained. Then comes the, "then they must be a born leader because they choose to train to be one." That was a quote from someone in my class and I hope you followed it. lol |

I agree with my sis Gail. In the orient, rebellious children are sent to a special school to be cultivated into leaders. They see a rebellious child as a special person. Love, |

It was hard for me to write it. lol I guess what he was trying to say is why would someone want to be trained to be a leader without having the instinct to be one. It's kinda hard to explain. lol |

I see what your saying Emily, it makes sense that a born leader would excell better in a leader type training than one that wasn't born with the tendancy...and yes sis, I spotted that leader kinda rebellion in ya...hehe!! |

At one point in my life, I thought they were made, but now I have to say some are just born with the ability for GOOD leadership. When you "make" someone for leadership, they don't generally turn out to be the very best leader. For example, Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany, during WWI, he was a "made" leader, and you would be surprised to read up on him and find out how childish and selfish he was, and his lack of interest for keeping the peace. Wilhelm was also born with a withered arm, and because of this he was literally tortured through childhood. It is said many of his irrational actions as Kaiser were due to him making up for having a withered arm. Then, prime example of Hitler. Hitler is said to be one of those "made" leaders much like the Kaiser, as Hitler is said to have been missing one of two parts of a certain genitalia, and that because of this he acted in a manner so as to prove his manlihood. |

This is a very good question and Persephone gave some good examples, but than again look at Winston Churchill who was such a poor speaker, handicapped with both dyslexia and stuttering, and who was rejected from college (I bet he suffered alot during his school years). His teachers told him that because of his difficulty communicating, to avoid any career dealing with the public. Churchill went on to become one of the greatest speakers of all time; the same man, through the power of his spoken word, rallied his nation and the Free World to defeat Hitler. so I'm not sure what "makes" a leader. Maybe it's the power to communicate? Ronald Reagan was called "The Great Communicator" and helped bring down the Soviet Union...Kelly

Quite true, Kelly. I think that Churchill was one of those men who were "born" leaders, and forged his way through life regardless. He certainly did a wonderful job of creating delicate European balances and handling the various wars, etc. |

Persephone, that was a very good response. I liked your facts. Thanks for pointing that out to me. |

I lean toward the 'Leaders are BORN' theory. Of course, a person has to possess the basics; intelligence, drive, desire, and what often seems to be an inborn *sense*, if you will, and determination to lead. It may show up at a very early age. Just watch a bunch of children at play or working on a project. There always seems to be one of them that appears to be "running the show". He or she will be saying "Follow me", with the way they present themselves. Now, this is USUALLY the way it is, however, that quiet little kid in the corner of the room just might, and often does, grow up to surprise everyone too. *wink* |

I think they get made. Without the people then the leader would be nothing. The people make up the leader. |

its a mixture of both 1 you gotta be born into a strong family that believes in fight for your rights etc etc 2 you gotta learn what it takes to be a great leader and trust me its not easy im in ARMY JROTC and i am a squad leader being it my first year its not the easiest thing to do |

Politicians are bought. Leaders are ordinary folks who are willing to do what is right and have the wisdom to see what has to be done and the willingness to do it. Leaders are born, not made, IMHO. Free Girl |

both...they are born to lead people in directions, but they are only made when they accomplish the skill of knowing they have it. |
