My Irish Grandmother's Beliefs......(Hawk)

My Grandmother had many beliefs, many call them superstitions. I'll add more as I think of them.

Never leave your shoes on a bed because it is bad luck.

Never open an umbrella in the house because it is bad luck.

If you break a mirror it is seven years bad luck.

Never walk underneath a ladder that's bad luck too.

If a black cat crosses your path, you will have some more bad luck.

Never kill a spider in your house because they are good luck.

If a bird flies into your window, falls and dies then it means there will be a death in the family. (This has happened several times at my parents house. It has always resulted in a death within the week!)

Death always comes in threes. (Always....at least in my family!)

If someone drops a spoon it means that unexpected company is coming.

If a broom falls that means company is coming too.

Date: 10/12/2001 11:25:00 AM  From Authorid: 33925    LOL!! I have heard all of these as well...the spider one is different though..I was told never to kill a spider because it will rain the next day...also, if you spill salt you should toss salt over your left shoulder to prevent bad luck...@}----xoxo
Date: 10/12/2001 11:26:00 AM  From Authorid: 32086    Here's some I grew up hearing... If a butter knife falls on the floor, someone will show up at your house hungry and coming from the direction the knife was pointing... If you put your shoes on a table you'll never marry... If you kill a daddy-long-leg spider it will rain shortly afterward...
Date: 10/12/2001 11:30:00 AM  From Authorid: 32086    Oh, and if you get out of the left side of a bed evil will follow you throughout the day.
Date: 10/12/2001 11:33:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 277    LadyLuck! I can't even count ho many times my Grandparents made me throw salt over my shoulder as a kid after I spilled some! I used to knock the bottle over on purpose just so I could toss some over my shoulder.....lol! Never heard of the knife thing serialchic, but I'll remember it. My Grandma did say "If you put your shoes on a table you'll never marry" too!
Date: 10/12/2001 11:37:00 AM  From Authorid: 42792    WOW!!! if you think about it it's all bad luck. At least for me...unexpected company and death fall under the bad luck category for me, as well. I have these superstitions in my family too and they are usually right I guess that's why they have been around so long. Good Post...NKA
Date: 10/12/2001 11:42:00 AM  From Authorid: 16061    Heard most of these - thanks Hawk
Date: 10/12/2001 11:45:00 AM  From Authorid: 33925    Oh I have a story about the birds as well..in 93 I was sitting in my dining room, when two baby birds hit my window at the same time! I went out to see if they were ok, and both were dead, their necks snapped. Less than a week later, I got the phone call that one of my best friends was in a car accident and both of her little girls were killed on impact...both with broken necks...@}----xoxo

Date: 10/12/2001 1:03:00 PM  From Authorid: 19092    My Grandmother was Irish also and I have heard many of these before. The death comes in threes has also been true for our family.
Date: 10/12/2001 1:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 33088    Amazing. With us it's shoes on a TABLE, and if a bird gets INTO your house, and as for falling cutlery, a knife means a man will visit, a fork, an woman, a soup spoon an unmarried (available) woman, and a teaspoon, a child will visit! Thanks, Hawk! Love,
