I believe i have a disorder..

I believe i do indeed have a disorder..I am 17 years of age, and full of life..i personally feel that my life isn't stressed out, but the disorder i have suggests otherwise..its name is Trichotillomania, and its characterized by the "Recurrent pulling out of ones hair resulting in noticeable hair loss. An increasing sense of tension immediately before pulling out the hair or when attempting to resist the behavior. Pleasure, gratification, or relief when pulling out the hair. The disturbance is not better accounted for by another mental disorder and is not due to a general medical condition (e.g., a dermatological condition). The disturbance causes clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning. "

I started pulling my hair out when i was younger..about 8 or 9..back then it was only my eyebrow hair or my eye lashes that i would tug at..nothing severe..no one could tell, and the hair grew back..harmless..until about 2 weeks ago i started pulling out the hair on my head..i don't know why, but i just found myself tugging at single strands of hair, and it really didn't hurt..it started with me searching for coarse, dark strands of hair, and then pulling them out..but then i started pulling out regular strands in little bunches at a time..i now notice that a lot of hair is gone where my part is in my hair, and i thought no one would notice, until tonight, when just 10 minutes ago my mom noticed and embarrassed me in front of my grandparents and asked "what is wrong with your head?!?!?!" and my grandma said she noticed it a couple days ago and thought i was going bald..totally embarrassing to have my mom tell me i "looked like a skunk now"...17...head full of hair..now i look like a skunk..this obsessive compulsive disorder (ocd) is wreaking havoc on my young life..sorry if this all sounds gross..sorry if you could care less..i just wanted to know if anyone of you out there have had this disorder or have it now and what to do about it..i'm very sad now and wondering why i'm doing this..:o(

You have to try and redirect this behavior to something more healthy... like if your tense... go run... or draw or do something else but pull your hair out. I think hair pulling is actually a lil more common then people know. There is always varying degrees. I know I tug at my eyelashes and eyebrows once in awhile when I feel anxiety or stress. Hope that helps
Date: 10/6/2001 9:44:00 PM  From Authorid: 39258    weird, i watched a show at 1 in the morning once about this. the one lady pulled on her hair and pulled it ALL out and now has to wear a wig. the other lady pulled on her eyebrows and lashes... now, she has to wear a lot of eye liner and fill her eyebrows in with a pencil to make it look "normal." I think they both went to therapy and it helped A LOT (just a suggestion) the lady doesn't pull on her wig because she doesn't get the satisfaction because she doesn't FEEL it getting pulled out... but what was recomended to them was keeping their hands busy at ALL times... like, get a stress ball and just squeeze it... always play with a pencil or something... just so your hands are occupied and not wanting to wonder to your hair... good luck! -telsha
Date: 10/6/2001 9:50:00 PM  From Authorid: 17789    Hey, you know that seeking aid from a doctor would surely be of tremendous help to mental disorder, I have experienced what you're going through now....but but mine was not as obsessive as yours...I would find myself cleanse from pulling out strands of damaged hair (those you have described, coarse, dark and think strands), until I was a little bald in the uppermost of my scalp....I couldn't stop myself from doing that...starting, it was like a pleasure but it slowly turned into a habit, but lucky for me I manage to focus my attention on other things rather than to remind myself to seek pleasure from this idiosyncrasies, and from time to time whenever I have the urge to pratice this habit, I would direct my focus on to some other things and gradually the desire cease......well, I hope that my experience would be of help.....if you failed to do so, go and seek a doctor, I'm sure that you wouldn't want to look 80 when you're 17. Sincerely,
Date: 10/6/2001 9:52:00 PM  From Authorid: 7654    Karra, the first thing you have to do is talk to your parents about this ..Then go to a doctor and get him to check you out..There are medications that you can start taking that will help with this problem...But without this medication it want just go away if in fact this is what it is...So please speak to your parents.
Date: 10/6/2001 9:55:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 8453    I mean its not THAT serious..its not like i'm tugging out huge tufts of hair..like handfulls or anything..its a strand here and there..and yeah, it can add up..i just wanted to see if there was anyone else out there who wouldn't think i'm a freak for having trich..
Date: 10/6/2001 10:02:00 PM  From Authorid: 39258    i dont consider you a freak... and it may not be a lot of hair now, but like you said, it adds up. you might want to get 'help' for it before it gets worse... just to be on the safe side..but ANYONE who thinks you are a freak for it is seriously retarded... and ill kick their butt... -telsha

Date: 10/7/2001 7:26:00 AM  From Authorid: 31535    My best friend of 19 years was diagnosed with this when she was a teen, the doc put her through therapy, and meds. She is a great mom now. I hope things get better for you too
Date: 1/19/2002 10:14:00 PM  From Authorid: 18516    My mom does this too. Your not a freak! I remember when she pulled her hair to the point where she had a bald spot. I'd say go see a doctor..and see what they can do to help ya out. Good Luck!!!
