Commercialism and 9-11...HaqZombie

OK. First of all, I feel for the people in NYC...I don't know what's going to happen later with that Laden guy, but that's not the point of this story.

The point that I'm trying to make is that company's are marketing this stuff and making a profit off of it. I know that the first thing that you will tell me is that "all profits are going to the Red Cross" and stuff like that. Well, guess what...not all of it is going there. And what is the deal with other company's (i.e. Wal-Mart, my local radio station) using this for promotional deals??? I work at Wal-Mart, and one day while I was there, I heard a commercial come on over the intercom system. "Attention Wal-Mart shoppers...are you proud to be an American??? If you are, stop by and pick up one of our t-shirts and sweaters! Remember, you should be proud to be in America. And as always, thank you for shopping our 24-hour Wal-Mart!" It said nothing about donating profits to the Red Cross or anywhere! And a local radio station in town...here's a commercial for them. "Lee Greenwood's Proud to be an American playing in the background...God Bless America. Y105" That's IT!!! I think that it's interesting and it sickens me the fact that companies have the right to play this tradegy like it was just another promotional ploy for them!!! I know that you've heard it at least once, and maybe you noticed it, maybe not. I'm just saying that there should not be companies who are trying to milk this date for all it's worth!!! Hope I ticked off a few company owners here in saying "Don't Bother!!!"

Date: 10/6/2001 9:05:00 AM  From Authorid: 18201    I agree with you! One of our local station did a fund raiser for the victims, but another one started a charity in the name of one of their DJ's. The station I listen to was furious. Our station did blood drives and donated their weekly salaries to charity. Some of them worked for the first 4 days STRAIGHT! We drove doen the street yesterday and saw street vendors selling t-shirts...we stopped to ask who they were selling them for...but they were doing it for a nearby silkscreening place, not for charity. I've seen commercials for companies selling t-shirts, caps and other novelties just to make a buck...it makes me ill. It just goes to show that some people wll take advantage of anything in order to make a dollar...meanwhile there are people starving because they've lost their jobs and others mourning their families...it is truely a tragedy....

Date: 10/6/2001 9:12:00 AM  From Authorid: 35853    Yeah, these guys down the street from my company dp screen printing. The day it all happened, they were out trying to sell shirts and other things. They own a crooked business, selling drugs' to kids out the back door of their business. I know for a fact they were just out to make a quick buck. When they came down to us, we asked them who the profits were going to, and they all three said something different, two times, untill they agreed on one thing. I know there are a lot of people doing this. Wal- Mart has kept the same prices on their flags, just like it was any other day. So I don't think they are just trying to make a quick buck. These people will pay dearly one day! Have a nice day!
Date: 10/6/2001 9:16:00 AM  From Authorid: 24732    Like Old Navy, I went in that store 1 day after the WTC tragedy. They were selling t-shirts with flags on them, but none of it was going towards charities. That's terrible for Walmart to do that, and K-mart too. They just moved all of their red white and blue items to the front of the store, plus they removed guns from their shelves. So I'm not going there. And car dealerships, saying they are getting the economy going by offering 0 down and not paying extra money a month, but those trucks are so expensive hardly anyone but really rich people buy them any ways. Then at the end of the commercial they say "Are you proud to be an American?" Well not with those commercials I'm not.
Date: 10/6/2001 11:41:00 AM  From Authorid: 30229    You are very right!!!! There are some who see dollar signs when viewing tragedy!!! This is very sad, indeed!!! Thanks for sharing!
Date: 10/6/2001 8:53:00 PM  From Authorid: 24813    I agree with what most everyone here said. It really isn't right to use this as an opportunity to make a profit. One of the worst things I've seen is that commercial/infomercial selling a flag/patriotism package. How low is that - marketing specifically toward people's reactions to all of this. It's fine if its purpose is to financially assist in the cleanup, etc., but not simply for private profit. - Gecko

Date: 10/10/2001 11:20:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 31997    I know that this country is based on capitalism and free-enterprise, but I think that there should be a limit as to how much "free-enterprising" can go on. I was flipping through a magazine yesterday, and I saw a picture of New York. Man, are there too many billboards up there. What's the deal?
