I really want to help, any suggestions? **Shelly***

I have been watching all the devastation around me, and my spirits have been lifted by the outpouring of love and help everyone is giving. I sit here feeling helpless and I want more than anything to help in some way. My husband and I have both said we would love to go to NYC to help out but this is impossible for us at the time. I have done my share of praying and I will continue to do so, but I feel now more than anytime in my life that I want to do something to make a difference here. I can't stand this feeling of helplessness. Every idea I come up with would require some sort of money and I have none, which just makes me feel more helpless. My husband works at Pepsi and they have let them know that if they donate to the red cross that Pepsi will match what they donate. They are also sending all available bottled water. They have also told them if they have any military, fireman, or medical training, they will send them to NYC to help out and still pay them their paycheck. My husband is not qualified for any of these things but he will be making a donation that we can afford. But I still feel I need to do something. I can no longer sit back and watch helpless. Does anyone have any ideas what we can do to help that doesn't require major funding? Does anyone have any ideas on how we could do something together to help? Thank you for any suggestions. @}-------- Shelly

Tell the people you know here on USM. Love is the only medicine that can help heal these wounds. Confusion in the mind and heart is such a hard thing to deal with at this time. Your demonstration of love and support can help people to remember what really matters.
Date: 9/13/2001 10:42:00 PM  From Authorid: 36704    you can donate blood, donate money to the red cross, fly your american flag, stay calm, help those around you who are still hurting from the loss, offer to volunteer collecting money for the red cross or setting up fundraisers, set up a fundraiser on your own with friends and family, get a restaurant or local radio station involved, there's a lot of things you can do...base
Date: 9/13/2001 10:44:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 31368    Oh geez, now you've got me crying again. I have been doing this, since the beginning. I want to try and organize something that would help those in NY. I have already been to donate blood, that was the first thing I thought of. I know the volunteers are in need of clothing, boots, and tube socks, since they are changing their clothes so often. I'm thinking maybe I could go around to my community and take up a collection and send it. I'm also going to call my local department stores and ask them to put a large donation box in the front of their store, so people can buy something while they are shopping and drop it in the box if they like. I think as long as I'm keeping myself busy, helping, I can pull myself up out of this funk. @}------- Shelly
Date: 9/13/2001 10:45:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 31368    My husband is putting our new flag up tomorrow morning. Thank god for my mother-in-law. We haven't been able to find one but she did. @}----
Date: 9/13/2001 10:47:00 PM  From Authorid: 36704    all the things you said would be good, go around your neighborhood and do that and drop it off at the red cross, do what you need to do for yourself to get you through it, everyone reacts differently and you think you're way of dealing is to not be idle and throw your hands in I say good luck...base
