i was just wondering, earlier today, someone told me that hatters, back when charles dodgson wrote alice in wonderland, hatters had a reputation for being, well, nutty because of chemicals they worked with. this came from a less than reliable source, so i would like someone to clarify that. thanx!! -madhatter87

Date: 8/29/2001 5:50:00 PM  From Authorid: 14247    I have heard this as well. It was something to do with a chemical. They were called "Mad hatters" because the hats they made contained Mercury I think, and it made them "mad".

Date: 8/29/2001 5:53:00 PM  From Authorid: 35042    It is because the hats were made using chemicals which contained Mercury and other "heavy metals" (technical term, not figurative) Anyway, this leads to poisoning eventually and does funny things the the central nervous system - twitches etc. Hence "mad"

Date: 8/29/2001 7:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 38119    That's true. They worked with mercury, a highly toxic metal. This caused insanity.
Date: 8/29/2001 9:55:00 PM  From Authorid: 5353    Yeah, mercury was used to take the course outer hair off of beaver fur, leaving the silky soft fuzz that they used. Unfortunatly they didn't know mercury was toxic and easily absorbed into the skin, going straight to the brain and causing insanity. You're friend had it right!
