I have heard this as well. It was something to do with a chemical. They were called "Mad hatters" because the hats they made contained Mercury I think, and it made them "mad".  |

It is because the hats were made using chemicals which contained Mercury and other "heavy metals" (technical term, not figurative) Anyway, this leads to poisoning eventually and does funny things the the central nervous system - twitches etc. Hence "mad"  |

That's true. They worked with mercury, a highly toxic metal. This caused insanity.  |

Yeah, mercury was used to take the course outer hair off of beaver fur, leaving the silky soft fuzz that they used. Unfortunatly they didn't know mercury was toxic and easily absorbed into the skin, going straight to the brain and causing insanity. You're friend had it right!  |
