Yes we should, and we should have done it years ago. The problem was the U.S. educational system got all wrapped up in using CONVERSION FACTORS as a way to teach the metric system. The best way is just to change your frame of reference. IE: 100 meters is the distance from your house to the end of the block, one centimeter is about the width of my little finger etc. The metric system is so easy, everything is in factors of ten. The best way is just to crash course it all- set a ten year deadline and DO IT. |

Oh lord not the Metric system again...LOL just kidding. Maybe we should. If we start now then my grandchildren will not be as confused as I sometimes get..LOL |

Why would we? Things are fine the way they are...why add confusion and change something that works??? |

Actually things are not fine the way they are. I'm an Engineer and we often buy equipment made in Europe or Japan. Then everything has to be matched up by converting something. Then we have to have two sets of spare parts, even two sets of nuts and bolts, screws, bearings etc. Our maitenance people have to have two sets of tools, It goes on and on. |

Yes, I think we should it's just some people are too lazy to convert. But if you start teaching in the lower grades we could eventually switch over all together. (<>..<> Alien |

I thought there were 3 countries using the standard measurement (at least there were a few years ago.) I really think we should change, but then we have speed limits of 120 kmh and speedometers still using the standard measurement... ack! |

Firstly the metric system is the Standard System, S.I. Units are metric. S.I. being The International System of Units. Scientists - Physicists, Astronomers, and most Engineers have been using the metric system for ages. Although in some fields the Imperial System is used. e.g. Pilots use knots as airspeed and feet as altitude. But trust me the metric system is so much easier to use. You can use degrees Celcius instead of Farenheit. Gee that makes sense 32 - freezing point of water instead of 0. 212 - boiling point of water instead of 100. Quick what's 3/4's of 212, buzz, times up, I'm sorry, the correct answer is 75 degrees Celcius. I don't mean to sound rude here but my point is metric is so much easier to use. There is way more accuracy with the metric system as well. There are more divisions in a given frame of reference so it's more accurate. Also when you are converting from imperial to metric it's not as accurate because imperial is not as accurate as metric. I agree with Bcar, set a date and crash course it. I'm not sure how they did it here in Australia but that was back in the 1960's, and we haven't looked back. I don't feel that its hard to learn either, especially for young children. I knew the most important things by the time I was in primary school, when I was 9. But hey if the world's ending in 2 years time, why bother? |

australia and britain changed to metric under the assumption that america was going to change as well. guess what, at the last moment, america changed its mind and decided to stay with the imperical system. I think you will find that australia ran with both systems for some years and then slowly disregarded the imperical as metric took over. Tikarn |

Why mess with a good thing? Are we supposed to change just because the rest of the world has? |

The rest of the world changed because of america, how was going to change, but decided not to. It really makes no differance to the comman man weither it is metric or emperial, being in the navy, i have to use both systems of mesurment. distance at sea is messured in nutical miles, height messured in feet, depth however is mesured in metres? go figure.
