Mechanic save bird's four-wheel nest
A team of mechanics has come to the rescue of a bird found nesting in a pile of cigarette butts under the rear axle of an old fire truck.
The pied wagtail had made her home on the disused Land Rover about to be taken to auction by Forestry Commission workers in the New Forest but was spotted in the nick of time.
"Crusty Pie", as she has been nicknamed by the mechanics, is now protected by barricades thrown up by the crew. Her four-wheel-drive nursery is now set to remain stationary until her young fly the nest.
The mechanics were shocked to discover her bringing up her brood just inches from their metal-bashing operation.
Mechanic Dave Bryant said: "We spotted Crusty hopping into a tiny gap in the metalwork with fag ends in her beak. We reckoned she was either a heavy smoker or she was using them to build a nest."
