WHY DOES SOCIETY HAVE DOUBLE STANDARDS ON "EQUAL RIGHTS"???????

There is no such thing as a "master race". It sickens me that some people actually believe that one race or nationality is better than others. No matter what heritage someone comes from, people are individuals, and not all the members of a race or nationality are the same. There is no "right religion" either. There are DIFFERENT religions, and no religion stands alone in validity.

Society has been so determined to counter racism that they have gone overboard by creating things such as "political correctness", and college funds for certain races.Even people's standards have gone overboard.Supposedly we have a society of equal rights these days right? But then how come there are college funds for only black people, only hispanic, but no college funds specially for white people? And if there was a college fund specifically for white people, it would be thought of and labeled as a "racist conspiracy".By going overboard to ensure equal rights, people have developed a double standard for what is acceptable for one race to do.For example, in a school, if a black student calls a white student a "cracker", nothing happens. But if a white student calls a black student a "nigger", the student is severely punished, publicly humiliated, and a huge deal is made out of it.Or when a white person kills or hurts a black person or other minority, it's called a "hate crime", and the media makes a huge controversial deal out of it. But when a black person kills a white person, it is not called a "hate crime" and the media usually doesn't even report it because it occurs so often.

*An FBI report says blacks murder whites 18 times more than whites murder blacks.

The U.S. constitution states Freedom of Religion right? But how come there is a double standard for this also? In a mainstream job, a Christian can wear their cross all they want. But if a Wiccan wears a Pentacle, they get reprimanded, told to never wear it again because it's "unprofessional" or "negative", or even fired.

Or just plain discrimination against ppl who look or dress different. For example, the kid who wears black and has purple hair and alot of weird silver jewelry gets labeled as "evil", "devilworshipper", "gay", on drugs, and a bad influence even though the kid makes strait A's in school and has a perfect conduct record, is a Christian, and is extremely intelligent and artistic. But the prep who wears his mainstream clothing and football jacket, but picks on others, and breaks the rules gets thought of as a good student and a model for other students.

See what I mean about a double standard on "equal" rights?

Date: 6/13/2001 6:49:00 PM  From Authorid: 11097    You are 100% correct, and while I believe in some ways "individuals" look to eliminate the rasim and negative labels, its still majority rules. I believe people should be based upon character and not looks, religion or the color of their skin, but unfortunalty, not everyone thinks like me, and once again, one small voice cannot change the minds of one powerful voice. Equal, nothing is equal anywhere and never will be, but someday I believe all justice will be served. Good post and I believe u hit the nail on the head. -Cheryl
Date: 6/13/2001 7:34:00 PM  From Authorid: 32789    i have been fighting this too for ages. i hug a black friend i see in the grocery store and suddenly i am a 'n lover'. so what! i have friends and acquaintances of all kinds. i dress differently than a lot of peeps around where i live, so i have been called satanist, whore, floozy...the list goes on forever. i think we just need to tell the government and media to go do things their way, and we'll just go do things our way. guess what? our way is best, and we won't have to put up with all the political correct garbage either. i like it better when people speak their heart and mind. then i KNOW where i stand with them and can make a clear decision whether to be around them or not. the way things are now i never know because people are so 2 faced. meru
Date: 6/13/2001 7:59:00 PM  From Authorid: 34341    I understand what you are saying. However, on the racial point in regard to education, something must be understood. For years, the white race was the dominant one in North America, and got all the advantages at the expense of all other races. While it is true that there are "college funds for only black people, only hispanic", you have to realize that for years there were no such funds and minorities were not able to realize their potential in our formerly white-dominant society. The presence of these funds today allows them to do so. Let us be honest here for a minute: our society used to be very prejudiced against those who weren't White Anglo-Saxon Protestants. That is fact. These funds should be looked at for what they are: atonement. I think, though, instead of complaining about their presence, it should be realized that it might well be a case of "too little, too late," and perhaps MORE should be done. I can't really see a double standard in this situation. As for the calling of racial epithets, you are quite right, and no one should be referring to anyone in a drogatory manner. As to the whole "hate crime" example you give, I don't think this is a term that should be bandied about recklessly by the media or anyone else, but it is obvious that labelling an incident a hate crime sells more papers, gets more ratings, etc. It's just the media doing what they do best--hyping things out of proportion. Don't get me wrong: there are some genuine incidences of hate crime out there, such as the Oklahoma case where a gay man was killed just because he was gay. As to the wearing of religious symbols on the job, I believe that no one should be allowed to, no matter what religion they are, unless the business is of a religious nature. I was recently offended to see a store clerk wearing overtly Christian buttons on her uniform at the checkout counter of a national chain recently, not because they were Christian, but because I don't believe that work is the place to do so, and because she was wearing three of them. <glock>
Date: 6/14/2001 11:49:00 AM  From Authorid: 34476    Good post, I will add that the term "hate crime" to me seems a bit redundant anyway. Couldn't ALL crimes be considered a hate crime of one form or another? --Paranoid--

Date: 6/14/2001 1:59:00 PM  From Authorid: 13897    it's really sad how things are in a country that is supposed to be based on freedom. *sigh* oh well...great post. hope it gets people to think.
Date: 6/14/2001 2:06:00 PM  From Authorid: 31783    I have thought along the same lines many times. I remember seeing a lady with a T-shirt on that said "100% Black Woman". While I see nothing wrong with anyone being proud of their roots, I thought it was a shame that if one wore a T-shirt that says "100% White Woman" they would get in "trouble". (ie rude comments, possibly beat) I see the point of the college scholorships. Both sides as a matter of fact. If everyone thought like me, race, sex, religion (or lack thereof) would have nothing to do with who enters college. The fact remains, though, that not everyone thinks like me. ~Jetamio~
Date: 6/16/2001 6:27:00 PM  From Authorid: 27678    This is because people do not do what is RIGHT, no matter the race or religion. The class struggle is alive and well and until we can work together, our puppet masters will continue to pull the strings. It's time to break out of the mindset we are in and to help one another to do what is RIGHT and to focus on that. Free Girl
