Have you ever noticed "weird", but everyday, words?

HAve you ever stopped to think about the pronounciation of some words and how they're spelt? Like, for instance, the word "fact" it kind of sounds like fat and cat put togeather. Another one is orange. Where did people come up with that one? Or the word "word", (which wasn't always in the english language, believe it or not) was some one just sitting there thinking "I can't remember that....I should make up something that means a group of letters, and I have to make it sound really funky, too....hmmm...I KNOW!! Word! it sounds like bird! PERFECT!!" can you think of any more?? (PS> this is just a weird rant of mine ... rant... that's another one...) -Kit

(seriously, why don't we just use the same "no" for everything? what does there have to be 1 word with 2 seperate spellings and meanings, or are they not the same word??...erg... I'm confused...)
