The nursing staff of the intensive care unit in a hospital in Johannesburg dreaded Friday mornings. Week after Week, whoever was placed in room 713 would be found dead first thing on Friday.
the hospital administraters launched an extensive investigation of the room. From air-conditioning ducts, to the single electrical outlet that powered the life support system. But the investigators found no sign of airborne viruses, no trace of faulty wiring, no indication of power surges. Nothing. In fact, one investigator commented on the cleaness of Romm 713.
If the investigators were baffled, the staff of the intensive caree unit was uneasy. What was going on in Room 713?
In the absence of any rational explanationfor the strange deaths, the nurses decided amoung themselves that they would no longer assign patients to Room 713. But one day intensive care became so crowded with new patients the staff had no choice. Someone would have to go to Room 713.
Early on Thursday evening, the senoir nurse of the night shift assembles her staff."Tonight, we're all going to take one-hour shift in Room 713. I've worked a schedule. No nurse leaves that room for any reason. If the experts can't figure out what's going on, then we'll solve this mystery ourselves."
