the minister was probably referring to the teaching in the bible which states the church should be in the world but not of the world. the bible teaches that followers of jesus should not do the things that the worldly people do. not that it's necessarily sinful...i think he is just trying to point out that you cannot tell a christian from a non-christian anymore. there is a saying "when the world and the church are one, then the end comes". |
Date: 3/27/2001 7:51:00 PM From Authorid: 19092 Well, I can say I don't by lottery tickets, and I am not divorced, but I do watch TV and there is not much rated less than PG-13 on TV so I failed that. The first reply by the AA is on the mark. Christians are not sinless that's for sure, I am sure there are things I do that just didn't make the list. A humble Pastor is indeed a rare thing it seems. I hope you can find another church to plug into with a Paster you respect and like. There sure does seem to be alot of Sunday christians. God bless, |

Date: 3/27/2001 8:05:00 PM From Authorid: 16612 I'm Christian, but some ppl are close-minded and say I'm not just because I believe many Gods and Goddesses exist. And I believe that God serves us, not the other way around.God is all powerful, and he doesn't need our help and he doesn't need us to worship him. |
Date: 3/27/2001 8:14:00 PM From Authorid: 3125 Hi Lemon..I agree with the minister..A true Christian is one who tries to be Christ-like..Can you imagine Christ being guilty of doing some of the things that some of those who claims to be Christians are doing?..The Bible teaches us that "We are to be doers of the word and not hearers only".Gambling is a sin.It is considered as an evil act according to Christ.Since Christians are to try to live as much like Christ as possible and Christ sat an example for us,do you see any place where Christ gambled? Buying lottery tickets is a form of gambling..R-rated movies contains a lot of vulgarities..They contain filthy language, filthy sex scenes,etc..A Christian is suppose to attempt to keep a clean mind, not expose themselves to filth..God says that the only cause for divorce is if a spouse commits adultery also one is free to marry another if a spouse dies..One can separate from their spouse and remain single but in God's eyes a man and woman is still married unless their spouse dies or commits adultery..Those are the only two reasons a man and woman can be free to marry another..If a person breaks God's laws he is living in sin..One cannot have both ways..You either are obedient to God's laws or your not.. Anyone can call themselves a Christian but they are deceiving themselves if they continue to break God's laws..Calling oneself a Christian is easy, but it's the actual doing of God's laws that makes one a Christian.. Sincerely Rusure |
Date: 3/27/2001 10:16:00 PM From Authorid: 27678 While we know we are all sinners, and certainly these things you referred to are sins, they are common problems in society. As far as these things being equal to non-believers, Christians should really ask themselves, WHY? Shouldn't our love for God be able to at least keep the numbers down in the CHURCH? I think people don't really care about God, His Laws, idolatry they are immersed in, or doing what is right. They want the stigma of being "Christian" for how it looks to others, not how it looks to God. Good post. Free Girl |

Date: 3/28/2001 7:49:00 AM From Authorid: 15232 Well, lottery is gambling, and that is a sin. Watching movies with perversity is a sin, and divorce is a sin and shameful to God. I don't think he was saying that we have to be perfect. I think he was just trying to bluntly show us that we aren't trying hard enough to live our lives for God. We are starting to get more lenient when it comes to worldly actions. And year after year, those actions seem to not be as wrong as they used to be. I just think he was trying to make a point, and get other christians to think and evaluate their actions as christians. |

well, as far as opinion goes, here goes mine Christians are common folks, but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. The minister does sounds a bit judgmental, instead of doing the job of planting seeds(teaching the word only) and allowing the souls to chose. As for the purchasing of lotto tickets on any given day. That’s something I believe to may non-Christian as well as he say “Christians” is an act of entertainment. It’s the so call and judgmental “Christians” I believe that throws it all out of proportion. Straining at gnats and swelling camels(Matthew 23ead all of it)... as long as one does not go over board with anything and this includes even your so call gambling (lotto tickets)...and not taking away from your responsibilities at home and or work, Our Father does not care about things like that. That’s the least of His worries about us. What He does and has preached on, and points out as a strong concern of His all through scripture as well as one of his chief Apostle Paul teachings, is the matter written in Matthew 24, Mark 13 and Luke 21 also II Corinthians 11:3. We as christians must never feel that all it takes to get to heaven is to look holy, follow the church rules, which many times has nothing to do with the Bible(The Word of God) when you go and check it out for yourself But where is the teaching of the coming of Christ and how to prepare for that. As for the watching of bad movies, that’s at every adult discretion. I believe that true christens know their limits. Even a non-christen practice such discipline in their lives and in their homes. Give me a brake, as adults why do we need a preacher or any one in a pulpit or any where else, to tell us how to behave in the privacy of our homes, when it comes to things like that. As for divorces. This may sock you but God is a divorced man Himself(Jeremiah 3). This may sock you again, but divorce has been around for thousands of years, and there is a good reason for it (because of the hardness of their"who" hearts? the unjust of course. Not for Christians i grant you, but all are not christians and may true Christians have and does and will find them selves wedding up with the wrong persons. Being unequally yoked is a sin. So repent, get out of it following the laws of the land, God forgives, move on, sin no more). Another shocker... you may want to sit down for this one... “Divorce” is not the unforgivable sin. Hope this minister is not committing the sin that David was discipline by God for...It’s not any man’s job to number God’s people. To judge, or to try and figure out who is right and who is wrong. That’s God’s job. Christian’s jobs are to teach not judge. The strength comes from Hearing The Word Of God. Faith, it is written, comes by Hearing and Hearing By The Word of God(Romans 10:17)! Once you plant a seed it’s up to Our Father to make it grow not any person or persons. For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God( Romans 33) (and i did try to keep this short, sorry |
Date: 3/28/2001 2:34:00 PM From Authorid: 28717 Hmmm good question- It means that Christains are as capable as of sin as the next guy and way too many of us think we got it made because of "grace". Actually, i don't think any of the above things are sins per say, alot depends on the history behind each person' decision to to what he did. If i were to say, all are sins, well, that is pretty darn close to judging. Maybe this pastor was trying to shake up a few people into the reality of their lives. We all need a swat on the behind once in a while to jar us back on the right road. I know , trust me, I got so full of pride of my being reborn, and a good person, etc. that i got a really big wake up call. Thank you God for letting me feel humility. Doxiemom |

It looks like you got a lot of reply's to this one and I will admit that I didn't take time to read them. I hope I'm not duplicating anyone else. What bothers you about this Lemon is the fact that you don't like a church that wants to dictate every little part of your life... Well, GOOD FOR YOU... You shouldn't want one that does that... It's wrong... I don't like that either and most people don't unless they are extremely insecure people and it gives them an odd sense of security... It's called legalism. There are things in the Bible, our MAIN doctrine that should be clearly preached about. Some of the other things are really, really, GRAY areas or aren't mentioned at all. These things need to be decided by the person themselves NOT the church they go to... |
Date: 3/29/2001 11:38:00 AM From Authorid: 17874 Lot's of great replies to this post. I agree with most of them. The bottom line is that sin is sin regaurdless if we like it or not. We all do things that God lables as sin. That is why He sent His Son Jesus, so we could be forgiven those sins we commit. God Bless, Aargorn |
Date: 3/30/2001 6:25:00 AM From Authorid: 27603 As our Sr. Minister says, "We as Christians are not sinless, but we should sin...less." |
Date: 3/30/2001 4:23:00 PM From Authorid: 10798 I believe the preacher was pointing out how worldly so called Christians seem to be becoming today. God said for us to come out from among them and be separate. He said that we are to be a peculiar people...a "different" people. Those who are TRULY living for God and trying to please Him exercise Godly discretion in what they feed their minds on (books and movies). They exercise wisdom and restraint in their spending, making sure God gets His fair share of tithes and offerings, and true Christians will make every effort to make their marriages work. All these things are in accordance with the teachings and lessons in God's word. If you are REALLY a Christian, you will WANT to PLEASE God! |

Date: 4/2/2001 6:22:00 PM From Authorid: 32287 hey rusure! where in the bible does it say gambling is a sin? i don't wanna condemn, but come on. Maybe you interpreted the passage wrong. its important to remember not to take the bible to literally. and heck, i could murder someone and repent, and call myself a christian. God doesn't expect us to be perfect. in fact, those who try to be are often not as close to God as those who realize their faults. but whatever... i guess this sounds kinda mean. i don't really mean it that way. |
Date: 4/9/2001 10:27:00 PM From Authorid: 32841 the person above me has wisdom .you see clean the inside first .then the out side..some people who are clean on the outside ,meaning there life is in order .there ways look right but on the inside they are pride full. they see our faults.they condem us so you see there is no humilty .but he who cleanes the in side it is hard to see the results of this for it is hidden in the heart .were as we can be judged very easly for i am a sinner .st john of the cross.the dark night of the soul. look it up .it is the truth .also they are the one who will say havent we done many marvallous work in your name and god says i dont know you |
