Should all drugs be legalized? They might as well be! *DizzyME*

Hi. This debate is kinda a spin-off of my last debate about stupid laws... One particiular person on that debate had some good points and it really made me think... What is being done about drug use? Nothing. There is still a rise in it no matter what is done. Should it be legalized? Sure, why not! Then it would be a great money profit for the goverment, and all drug dealers would be out of buisness...

If cigarettes and alcohol are legal, why not everything else? they are just as bad to the health... Or should they make cigarettes and alcohol illegal? (yes i know alcohol used to be illegal and that didn't work out, but what about cigarettes?)

I wonder what is going to happen within the next few years... it seems more and more people are turning to drugs as an escape... as a party thing... or whatever... and it is getting worse. There is nothing we can do about it. This saddens me...

Date: 2/11/2001 10:43:00 PM  From Authorid: 13979    Drugs.... its not about the money! Think of it. It would be easy for people to get their hands onit if it were legal. Plus, Think of the death rate how high it would get. I dont think it should be legalized and drug trafficing hopefully one day will slow down and END! By the way do you know in Japan... Drug selling and Murder is equal! think of it... if you sell drugs youre helping someone kill theirselves... same as MURDER --Diana-->
Date: 2/11/2001 10:44:00 PM    Invariably and whole heartedly; YES!!!! Drugs are cool. All of them, except Herion and PCP. Even Crack is cool, you know? I mean crack should be given to hyper kids as a cheap fprm of Ritalin. Why not? It saddens me to see America's youth turned away from drugs before they even get a chance, let's hand em out with Milk in schools. Whaddya think? I'll bet you are high right now, I know I am. B'lee dat Beyotch... Superfly-TNT
Date: 2/11/2001 10:47:00 PM  From Authorid: 7341    Ooooh...this is such a toughie...I have so many opinions of drugs that I don't think I can even form a firm one. I have never done any drugs in my life,so I don't know the experience firsthand, but I have several friends who are so deep into them its pathetic. And it is sad....I do wonder what it would be like if they were regulated though....
Date: 2/11/2001 10:47:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 9130    You mean the punishment for drug dealing is the same punishment as murder in Japan? Wow. I never knew that.
Date: 2/11/2001 10:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 13974    *ahem* *cracking knuckles* *buckling into speialy designed USM debate chair* here we go... While I do agree that the drug problem in the US seems to be only on the rise, truth is there is much being done, it just isn't doing the job. FACT: People want to get high, and will do so without legal concent. FACT: Drug use is tearing us apart at the seams. FACT: Avid drug use is most offten detrimental to health and well being. Now with all these facts, I think the bigger question is reall, would it be right for the government to support drug use (that they don't already i.e. tobaco, alcohol) since they can't seem to stop it. I don't think so. Just becausethey can't stop it is no reason to support it. There is no reason to give up, just because you are losing. As I said in th earlier post, I would most likely be an addict, had it been legal. This also leads to health care issues. The cost of treating overdoses, addictions, and other such problems would IMO rise, and thus not be cost effective compared to the prevention we already have in place. Also, I just think it is a bad idea to tell kids that Uncle Sam says it is ok the be a crackhead when you grow up.
Date: 2/11/2001 10:52:00 PM  From Authorid: 27365    MARIJUANA IS A BEAUTIFUL PLANT THAT HEALS. Everything else can go exept the plants. Cocain comes from a plant yes, but it is dipped in so much of our man made garbage that it doesnt classify. MARIJUANA CAN STAY!!!! MARIJUANA MUST STAY...
Date: 2/11/2001 10:56:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 9130    Why is it cigarettes and alcohol aren't considered drugs? They are very harmful, yet they are legal... I personally do not smoke cigarettes, but I do drink occationally... I see the problems it has caused people in my family... people with liver problems, people who can't go a day without alcohol... And as for cigarettes it is a wonder I don't have lung cancer from growing up with two smoking parents-- one of which had half their lung removed two years ago...
Date: 2/11/2001 11:01:00 PM  From Authorid: 13974    I think the legal ones are thrown to us so we at least have something, and they dont have the narcotic qualities that make so many druigs illegal. Also have you ever been around somone who is trying to quit smoking? Man imagine it was taken away from everyone, that many of us smokers quiting at once, they would tear this place apart! hehe
Date: 2/12/2001 3:29:00 AM  From Authorid: 21714    ??????? ????????? ????????? Ok.... lemme see.... legalize drugs????? why????? well they are quite a bit more deadly than alcohol and cigarettes...... in other words, alchohol and smokes wont kill you the first time you try it....statistically, and the government thrives on statistics. and you said that that if they legalize it, the government can make money off of it.... well, they already are!!! where do you think all the money confiscated from dealers goes???? to the government!!! what was it last year..... total around 8 billion?????? give or take a billion..... but still quite a big number. now if it was legalized, do you really think the govt. could top that income legally??? Nope... with the way it is now, they get all the revinue... not just a taxed portion.
Date: 2/12/2001 3:44:00 AM  From Authorid: 6032    i agree with you to some point with this topic. it alcohol and cigarettes are legal then some drugs should be too and it's true that it would be profitable to the government and put drug dealers out of business. but if drugs were legalized some people who would not have had easy access to it would. that would be the only down side to it.
Date: 2/12/2001 5:23:00 AM    The only drug that I think deserves legalization should be Marajuana... and I think most Alcoholic Drinks should be made illigal, except wine and champagne. During Prohibition, the Police weren't very advanced, but these days, if they have the power to be doing all these drug-busts, then they can handle alcohol this time. Xenon-Trioxide_131
Date: 2/12/2001 5:31:00 AM  From Authorid: 18201    You make a very good point. I do agree with you on some things and believe that some drugs should be legalized (marajuana for one), but as medicinal plants and pain killers that are regulated. Overseas where drugs are legal, the drug problems are no where near as bad, simply because they are not forbidden. Kids can't rebel against their folks by doing something illegal, because it is legal. Granted, some drugs are far more harmful than others (heroin, crack...), but cocaine was once an ingredient in Coca Cola for chrissake! Either way though, it doesn't really make a difference what is done...if we made drugs legal, people would find something more deadly and just as illegal to pass on the streets. Someone said that it isnt about the money...well, to some it is. I had friends in highschool who had never smoked, drank or done drugs in his life and never intended to, but sold pot to help pay the bills...it all depends on the point of view
Date: 2/12/2001 7:12:00 AM    tell ya what...next time some junkie robs pharmasave for a hit. I'll send them to your house...
Date: 2/12/2001 10:39:00 AM  From Authorid: 18155    Certain drugs should be legalized and anyone over the age of 21 should have access to more control substances than are regulated by the FDA.
Date: 2/12/2001 2:02:00 PM  From Authorid: 16612    I used to think that all drugs should be legalized, because when they are illegal they just create violence. But now I think drugs don't really need too be legal.-TessekTheQuarren
Date: 2/12/2001 2:37:00 PM  From Authorid: 21847    Cocain, Heroin, Ecstacy, Crack, PCP, LSD they should stay illegalized. Cigarettes should be illegalized, they are one of the worst. I know, my parents spend at least 100 $ a week on cigarettes, and you know what that's beginning to do to us? Marijauna is, in many ways much better (by better I mean safer and less addictive) then cigarettes. Drugs should be taxed and regulated by the government, because then they'd make a profit, and use would go down because now there'd be no drug dealers, not none, but fewer. What you all think? *Zero-Shark*
Date: 2/12/2001 5:16:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 9130    Zero shark-- that is what i said.-- about the profits anyways...
Date: 2/12/2001 7:04:00 PM  From Authorid: 8428    well cigarettes and beer take longer for the job to get done thus leading a possible stopping cold turkey thing going on.lsd and crack all have immediate effects and are wayyyy more dangerous than beer and cigs combined.also u cant ban cigs or beer cause imagine all the jobs to be lost
Date: 2/12/2001 7:30:00 PM  From Authorid: 25050    Alchohol is not illegal for many reasons. First is that alchohol has been in our culture for a long time. Alchohol is not harmfull when used ocasionally. Alchohol can even be heathy, it thins the blood and is good for the circulatory system. Alchohol is used to lose inhibitions. Alchohol is easy to detect you can smell it and the person will be acting strange. It is difficult to OD on alchohol. It is more difficult to take than a needle or a line. Other drugs are deadly and immediatly addictive. A marijuana smoker will smoke it every day; most alchohol users do not go to work or school drunk. Crack can make your heart explode the first time they use it. You have a responsibility as a member of a society to respect the wishes of your peers to not use drugs and to not bring drugs near them; it is the law. I personally do not want to pay medical bills for chronic drug users.
Date: 2/12/2001 7:37:00 PM  From Authorid: 25050    Government control of drug sales would be Socialism. It would degrate our nations integrity. Ever struggling drug addict is a burden to lots of people. Legalizing these toxic chemicals would lead to a lower standerd of life and create new addicts. You must be a Democrat.
Date: 2/12/2001 7:38:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 9130    25050-- I totally disagree with you... did you know that alcohol is the most commonly abused substance out there?(don't quote me on that one.) Alcoholoism is very serious. I have known people that have almost died from alcohol poisoning, so don't tell me that it is difficult to OD from. You say alcohol isn't harmful when used occationally? Well, neither is marijuania... and a few other drugs if you want to be truthful about it. but anything is harmful when used to excesses...
Date: 2/12/2001 7:41:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 9130    25050--I simply posted this to see how everyone feels about the issue... Did you know in some places (the Netherlands, i think) marijuania is legal? Other drugs are too, yet they have an exremely high standard of living... I am going to research this, i will get back to ya in a few minutes...
Date: 2/12/2001 7:46:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 9130    To the anonymous author-- yeah, you do that... whatever!
Date: 2/12/2001 7:47:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 9130    superfly-- you are really messed up you know that? They have pills for people like you-- and padded rooms too. :>P
Date: 2/12/2001 7:52:00 PM  From Authorid: 25050    Marijuana is not a dangerous drug. You can't overdose on it. It dose lead to devient behavior. People can be high and nobody would even know it. They can drive or walk around or do buisness while in an altered state of mind. If you smoke it occasionally than you should not have anything to worry about. Even if you did get caught once or twice you would get A fine. So it is barly illegal. The problem is the pushers. The people who spend time in their community High are a obstacle for everyone not just himself. Alchohol can be dangerous but much more difficult to OD on than coke.
Date: 2/12/2001 8:10:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 9130    still think about this: you can OD on most things if you try... yes, marijuania isn't as bad... i know that from experience... and yes, cocaine is horrible andso is crack-- they are much easier to overdose on... but like u said, the problem is the pushers, i do agree with that... what bothers me is that there is nothing that can be done to stop it anyway.... why not make it legal....and see what happens?
Date: 2/12/2001 8:12:00 PM  From Authorid: 25050    Making them legal means makes them socially acceptable.
Date: 2/12/2001 8:23:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 9130    don't you realize it is already becoming more and more socially acceptable?
Date: 2/12/2001 8:25:00 PM  From Authorid: 25050    Yes for young people who are the target market for all street drugs.
Date: 2/12/2001 8:29:00 PM  From Authorid: 25050    Mark Twain wrote this. "When Tom left home he was convinced his father was an idiot. When he returned home years later he was surprised at how much his father had learned."
Date: 2/12/2001 8:29:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 9130    true, young people do most of the drugs, but not always... there are many older people doing drugs that you would never expect-- i know because I have worked with many people like that...
Date: 2/12/2001 8:32:00 PM  From Authorid: 25050    So we put them on probation when they get caught and test them for drugs. We do this because they are damaging our society. They are illegal so we can control them and control addicts.
Date: 2/12/2001 8:37:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 9130    But they cannot be controlled... no one can make them stop but themselves...
Date: 2/12/2001 8:39:00 PM  From Authorid: 25050    Until you fail your drug tests and are locked up you probably won't want to fail again. After they damage your name you will not use them. They are difficult to control we cannot open the door and ask them to come into the country.
Date: 2/12/2001 8:41:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 9130    Yes, but look at Robert Downey jr. he got caught with drugs, was put in prison, got out, got caught again, and now will have to go back-- do ya think he'll do them again when he gets out?
Date: 2/12/2001 8:44:00 PM  From Authorid: 25050    High profile people always get linient sentences. Its not about weather they are going to use it again or not. Its more important to make it known that drugs are not allowed in our country.
Date: 2/13/2001 7:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 25050    Drugs might be more popular now. That dosn't change the fact that drugs cause dependent burntout people. People who often end up dead as a result. They take actions that harm themselves and others. People do not have the right to hinder all of society. If drugs are more acssesable to then they would also be more accessable for our children. When something that known to be deadly is sold for use that is definetly a crime. Imagine turning on the news and seeing people useing drugs everywhere and not being arrested. Would you want to live there?
Date: 2/13/2001 7:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 25050    Drugs can seriously screw someones life up. I would not advocate drug use.
Date: 2/14/2001 9:42:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 9130    25050-- You do have a point i suppose you have won this debate
Date: 2/15/2001 9:47:00 PM  From Authorid: 27046    Okay coming from a smoker........Cough Cough.........should they make cigarettes illegal now? NO and I say this not because I am a smoker. I say this because in the beginning when they were introduced no one knew the health side effects. Same with alcohol. To have it into society for years and then take it way, well you know we already did that once before and it didn't work. That is why there are laws now in effect for both cigarettes and alcohol. As for making other drugs legal, like I have stated on many other posts. It has been suggested before that it be made legal and government controlled, jack the price and make it impossible for people to afford it. Well I live in NY state and they have steadily jacked the price of cigarettes in Ny state. You cannot walk into any convenient store or grocery store in this state and find cigarettes within your reach. A store employee has to get them for you, everything is under lock and key, because of theft. It has been also said that it will free up prison space. No it won't. It will just get filled up with people that hold up stores and rob our homes trying to get the money to afford it. I know the dangers of smoking and I also know how it affects other people around me. That is why there are laws in effect in my state that you cannot smoke in public buildings, another way to protect those that are non-smokers. I must say that everyone has this big misconception that marijuana is a good for you drug. In case people haven't noticed it has the same effect on the body as alcohol. It slows down all motor function and in some people muscle function. If you are driving a car under the influence of marijuana you get charged with a DUI. It starves the brain of oxygen, and like ANY smoke that is inhaled it does contain tar and can cause lungs problems. Yes Marijuana can be theraputic, but that is why its under prescription only for those that are suffering from cancer and other such illness, to relieve thier pain, not for just recreational use. I have seen people complain about smoking parents in the home. I can see your point about that I lived with 2 parents that smoked as a child and I hated it then. But how much would you like to live in a house with 2 marijuana smoking parents, not like it and have your motor function be altered, and have to constantly take precautions for driving a vehicle and performing you job without feeling the effects of the drug. Considering we know so much about it I am sure that we know how effective being around the smoke of a joint can cause pretty good contact buzzes. In some cases good enough you could swear you smoked it yourself...........:0)........Azairyia
Date: 2/15/2001 11:33:00 PM  From Authorid: 25050    Drugs are bad.
Date: 2/16/2001 1:41:00 AM  From Authorid: 27046    25050.........you have me totally confused, one minute you are for it the next you are not? Are you ever going to make up your mind? lol.......:0).......I can say this I worked with the public for 7 years and I saw all walks of life everyday........There isn't one person that I ever saw that said to me hey can ya tell that I am high? I have always been able to tell. You may not be able to tell its marijuana but most everyone has some kind of side effect from it that sends off a warning signal to someone else that you are high. The sleepy eyes, red bloodshot eyes, the smell, slurred speech, impaired balance. Often people are mistaken as drunk instead of high, because, like I already stated, it has similiar effects..........Azairyia
Date: 2/16/2001 7:23:00 PM  From Authorid: 25050    Too bad I used to smoke weed at work everyday and nobody had a clue.
Date: 2/16/2001 7:43:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 9130    I agree with 25050-- I have friends who smake weed and sometimes you can never tell... they aren't all like you said
Date: 2/16/2001 8:57:00 PM  From Authorid: 25050    Some are, people that smoke marijuana early do not develope emotionally as quickly. They are more likely to have phychological disorders. Marijuana smokers are often led into a community of criminal activity. If someone is high and driving they are a hazard to all drivers. You can see how difficult a job it would be to get them off the road. Just because someone acts "normal" dosn't mean they are mentally, phisically, or spiritaly heathy.
Date: 2/16/2001 10:05:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 9130    25050-- you are correct-- but the same goes for alcohol drinkers also...
Date: 2/18/2001 12:23:00 AM  From Authorid: 25050    True, the diffrence is, alchohol is more difficult to consume. Most alchohol drinkers (not all) are social drinkers as opposed to your common pot head who smokes 5 times a day. Pull a drunk over and guaranteed you will smell it on him. If you OD on alchohol you will throw up. If you OD on other drugs its more difficult to cleanse your system.
Date: 2/18/2001 11:04:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 9130    but some people drink so much they get alcohol poisoning and that isn't so easy to fix...
Date: 2/19/2001 2:24:00 PM  From Authorid: 25050    And some people crash their car and die. it just is not a big enough problem to illegaly ban cars.
Date: 2/19/2001 7:01:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 9130    good point-- then why not legalize marijuana?
Date: 2/19/2001 7:53:00 PM  From Authorid: 25050    Because almost everyone who smokes marijuana smokes it more than one time a day.
Date: 2/19/2001 7:55:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 9130    Not true!!! But people who drink always drink more than one beer/ shot/ wine a day...
Date: 2/19/2001 9:08:00 PM  From Authorid: 25050    When you use the word always it is wrong most of the time.
Date: 2/19/2001 9:12:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 9130    Hey-- I was doing the same as you-- you used the word EVERYONE
Date: 2/19/2001 9:13:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 9130    Oh darn!! You said almost everyone... well I ment almost always
Date: 2/19/2001 9:25:00 PM  From Authorid: 25050    I would have a great time if drugs were legal but its not worth what our country would become.
