Greetings, friends.
The Covid-19 crisis continues, and we're all still stuck at home. But, here's a few more tips to make things more enjoyable, and hopefully, more livable.
First of all, plan out your dinner menus two weeks in advance. You may already do this, but a lot of people don't. If you know what your supper is going to be, then you can do away with a lot of meals "on the go." Also, when you're shopping, this will mean that you're buying two weeks' worth of food. This means you can avoid the crowds (and the perils).
Next, plan more meatless meals. One of the things which we're starting to see is a breakdown in the meat production and delivery systems. Already, Wendy's is having a shortage of burgers for its customers. This is only going to get worse as time goes on. But, with the sales of things like Impossible Burgers and Beyond Meat, you can still enjoy stuff that tastes like meat, without having to wonder about contamination. I've been eating meatless meals for years.
Invest in a Kindle. My wife got me one for Christmas two years ago, and it's been a lifesaver during Coronavirus. I can read as many books as I want and not have to cruise through bookshops or libraries. There are also some very good apps for books you can get get for your phone or iPad: Overdrive, Libby, which will give you access to unlimited numbers of books to read. Another good one is LOC (Library of Congress).
If you're tired of reading, try listening to things. I'm a big fan of Old Time Radio, and the Internet Archive has a limitless supply of that in their collections. You can also get podcasts, history, music and a whole lot more, absolutely free.
Handwashing is a big thing, these days, but remember you don't have to keep buying expensive soaps. Take those old spray bottles, add three tablespoonfuls of bleach and fill the rest with water. It will sterilize your hands (and anything else) just fine.
I've stressed the value of reading, and I still do. However, if you feelt you're falling into a rut with your reading, break it up by reading stuff that you don't normally touch: Westerns, history, obscure authors (I read a wonderful short story recently called Star Bright, by a forgotten SF author named Mark Clifton), etc. It will add variety to your life.
And finally, reach out to friends you haven't spoken to for a long time. Check in with them to make sure they're okay, and let them know you haven't forgotten them. My experience is that if you still think about them, they still think about you.
Be well, my friends. Stay safe! How it changed my life:If I can pass along wisdom learned and ease someone else's life in these difficult times, then I've done my duty.
