On days like this I really appreciate USM...

You know, guys, there's a LOT of hostility out there. I don't just mean in the world today. We have tons of issues with hatred, prejudice, animosity, etc in real life. Online, it seems people can be just as nasty. There's the whole idea of hiding behind a computer screen. Check reddit, or youtube comments, or even Facebook. People are just downright terrible to each other.

I often go on reddit to peruse posts or to just ask questions in certain forums having to do with my career, hobbies, etc. I posted two today -- a simple question asking when I can apply for Canadian healthcare since I'm working in Canada and will be relocating shortly. Then I posted an observation based on my teaching style. I commented that I find students feel comfortable asking questions, participating in class, and voicing their concerns because I tend to foster a very warm and open classroom where I treat the students (who are adults -- college students) as intellectual peers. I don't talk down to them and I don't assert myself as some fearful figure who just talks all class. Of course, I'm strict when it comes to the homework policy, attendance, and respect, but I've never had an issue with students disrespecting me or other students in my class and I feel like that has a lot to do with the open classroom environment. Oh man, I was torn to shreds in that post. People telling me to grow up, that my teaching style is inappropriate, etc. I get that we have disagreements and it's important to voice those. But why be so hostile? Why be so mean spirited? There's a way to voice concern, give advice, and share opinions. Being openly hostile and disrespectful towards others is not the way to do it. Insulting people is not the way to do it.

Thank you, USM. I don't think I've ever had anyone here be downright nasty to me for no good reason (in fact, I can't think of one instance). This is one place I know I can come where I will be treated with respect and compassion no matter what it is I have to say. You guys are great.

You are right, you just can't find that on other websites. Thank you for posting this Tina.

Date: 8/1/2017 7:15:00 PM  From Authorid: 22721    So true, USM is not fakebook. Just because someone will disagree, I see personal attacks all the time rather than a civilized conversation.
Date: 8/1/2017 8:38:00 PM  From Authorid: 998    I just don't really understand why people have to be so horrible to each other on the other sites. It seems that they take out their hatred on everyone for no reason at all.

I like to watch music videos of all kinds of musical styles and I dare not read the comments below since they can be so mean over nothing.

I'm so glad you really liked this community so much Tina. Yes, respect and compassion is abundant here and it is not fake. It is the way anyone would want to be treated no matter where they are in this world. Imagine standing in line at a bank, or shopping at a bakery and having someone come up to you and start cursing and making fun of your hair or clothing ... it just wouldn't be tolerated. I'm so glad our members here understand how to treat one another. Respect is the word that describes it, even if there is a difference of opinion.

I find it quite shocking, incredulous when I read some of the off the wall comments from people on the internet especially on facebook. Especially when others do not agree with their opinions, whether it’s politics to religion or in your case Your career choice and methods of teaching.
USM since joining the community has been and will always be my favorite website & my favorite people., and I’m sure not going to waste my time on sites where there is filthy language or people deeply insulting others-----I’ve wanted to start an account with reddit but still haven’t yet. Maybe I won’t since I’m learning that some people are extremely rude there.
What is the point in mistreating others. I’m not sure what others think they might gain by being mean—spirited toward others’ It’s a total waste of time and energy. It’s not even good for your health to be angry and mean toward others. It sounds like you have a very rewarding career & I’m very happy for you. I wouldn’t let what others say get to you, like water off a duck’s back, eh? I went to a wal mart earlier (yesterday now). When I walked in, I noticed people turning around staring at me---------I thought to myself, is there egg on my head on my face, what’s the deal? They weren’t even friendly even though I spoke to the majority standing in the lawn and garden check out line-----I thought to myself, “ I know it’s not Monday!” lol but sometimes people can be rude for no apparent reason. I should have started singing & humming my best rendition of Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World” That would have gave them Something to really talk about! Keep Smiling & continue being “Wonderful You!” It’s awesome to see you back here at our USMLand  Blessings!~ T/C

Date: 8/2/2017 7:28:00 AM  From Authorid: 21903    That's the truth! No one here was ever that nasty to me...even when I was an overly dramatic teen posting dumb drama! I see it every day: on FB I follow a couple of local news stations. I constantly slap my head at the ignorance I see on those posts, but I bite my tongue. A lot of people aren't that way and are downright hateful. I've seen comments going as far as suggesting someone kill themselves because they are "so dumb" or whatever. Its awful! I don't know why people can't just behave themselves online. Behave like you are looking someone in the face talking to them. It's amazing the nerve people have simply because of the screen in front of them.
Date: 8/2/2017 7:50:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 56297    Thanks for the thoughts everyone! I appreciate your input.

I love sharing my political, theological, and philosophical beliefs with others. I'm always looking to start a conversation but it seems every time I do it devolves into name calling, insults, and hostility. The only place where I've been able to share my thoughts freely is here. Like FreckleFace said, even when I was posting the most inane and immature drama on here, people attempted to be helpful and trust me, I posted some doozies. :P

Ky-Bluebird I never understood the point of mistreating others either. I do sometimes get riled up when people post prejudiced things online but I try to keep a calm demeanor while still expressing my viewpoint. You don't get someone to engage in conversation by being terrible to them. It just makes them not even want to entertain your view point. I had a composition and rhetoric college class last term. A big part of it was based on effective argumentation and communication. I stressed that the purpose of a good argument or debate shouldn't be to beat your opponent down. The aim should be for each person to come away with something even if it's nothing more than just a better understanding of another person's way of thinking.

Date: 8/2/2017 6:42:00 PM  From Authorid: 21435    USM is still my place of refuge. Good people, indeed. Write on, Tina Turner 12....
Date: 8/24/2017 3:49:00 PM  From Authorid: 42945    You can go to a lot of places on the internet and find hatred, nastiness and downright rudeness but at least you can come here and be treated with respect..and besides those points I've listed would definitely not be tolerated..
