Little known horror movies

Let's compile a list of horror movies which may not be popular in a mainstream sense but are nonetheless very good. I find most mainstream horror movies are predictable and boring. There are a few movies which really gave me chills despite the fact that they may be low budget or independent films.

1) Eraserhead by David Lynch -- This movie is surrealist in nature. Although made in the 1970's it was filmed in black and white. This movie is scary in the sense that it's disturbing and peculiar. If you are freaked out by surrealist situations I would recommend this film (although it can be hard to watch at times).

2) The Strangers - Ok, not technically independent and it is a bit mainstream but it deserves a place on our list because many people I mention it to have never seen it. We re-watched it yesterday and the minimalist story telling plus the fact that the murderers really had no motivation (completely random) really hits a nerve.

3) Tusk - This is a Canadian movie and it's super bizarre. Long story short, a man is held captive by another man who wishes to transform him into a walrus. The movie becomes silly towards the end and it is definitely a low budget/independent film. However, the subject matter is very original and some of the scenes are disturbing to say the least.

4) Monster - Not the movie about the serial killer. This is the movie about a mother and daughter trapped in a broken down car at night. An unknown creature stalks them. I love the fact that this independent movie had a dramatic backstory (the relationship between the mother and daughter) which appears in the form of flashbacks. Also, we rarely see the creature which stalks them. This works for me since often times what my mind creates is scarier than what is seen on the screen.

5) Hush - Not sure if this is independent or not but I was glued to the screen while watching it. It's a home invasion movie with a twist -- the protagonist is deaf and mute and as such there's almost no talking throughout the film.

I would recommend "Howl" (2015). This was put together quite well. Its about a train that is traveling at night with a bunch of passengers. Then it gets stuck out in the woods, where werewolves are. I am always disappointed with scary movies that just don't make the cut, but this one exceeded my expectations. Definitely recommend it.
