Cinderella – {A Halloween Fairy Tale}
Once upon a time in faraway kingdom there lived a struggling single mother who had three daughters. The mother worked long shifts in a factory which made magic lamps, and spared no expense to make sure that her daughters lacked for nothing. She knew that her girls had bright futures ahead of them because they were each special in their own way. Hilda was the eldest daughter and was working her way through medical school. Although slightly plain in appearance with brown hair and eyes, she had a kindly disposition and worked as tirelessly her mother as a nurse at a hospital in the center of the kingdom.
Mairlyn was the second daughter, and a hard worker just like her elder sister. Marilyn had a small position as a civil servant, but she also held a second job with the PETA. She carefully banked her money and had dreams of becoming a veterinarian. People who looked at her red curls and freckled face could tell that she had a giving heart, and everyone agreed that she would someday make a wonderful vet.
Every family has a flaw, though, and that was fully embodied by the third daughter, Cinderella. She was the epitome of a bimbo: blonde, buxom, and as sharp as a wet rag. Cindy—as her friends called her—spent every penny she had on fancy clothes, lingerie, and celebrity magazines. She regularly shirked her chores, but always seemed to have plenty of money. Although her family suspected she worked on a 900-phone line, the truth was they didn’t know.
One day the king announced that he was holding a fancy dress ball to celebrate the birthday of his son, Crown Prince Fred. Invitations were sent out to the single girls of the city, for the king hoped that his son might select a wife from their number; it was no secret that the king was tired of his heir’s playboy lifestyle. Cinderella went crazy with anticipation and spent every minute of every day getting her outfit ready for the big event. Her mother had tasked her with cleaning up the TV Room and shampooing the rugs that week, but on the night of the ball, the work was still undone. So, she told Cinderella that she couldn’t go. “Rule are rules, Cindy. Hildy and Mary did their work. You’re not special; far from it, in fact!”
“But this is my big chance!” Cinderella wailed. “Just five minutes with that prince and I’ll be able to walk away from all of this!” She pirouetted on her feet and showed off her slim figure and expertly fluttered her eyelashes. “How could he resist?”
“Dumbo power,” Hilda muttered, as she adjusted her Chanel Boucle suit.
“You’re not going,” her mother snapped. She hefted her lunch box and wave a hand at the room, and the Hoover steam-vac waiting in the corner. “You had all week to do your work, so it’s your own fault that it’s still undone. Now I expect to see this place spic-and-span when I get back from my shift at the magic plant.” “And what if I don’t?” Cinderella pouted, petulantly defiant.
“Well, we can always sell your wardrobe to pay your share of the rent.”
“No!” Cindy wailed.
And so the mother left to go to work, and Cindy’s two older sisters went to the ball, and Cinderella was left to stare at the dirty carpets and think about how she was missing her big chance. “I’d do anything to go out tonight!”
“Anything?” a strange voice asked. An overweight fairy suddenly appeared. Her face was hidden behind cat’s-eye glasses. “Fairy Godmother Miracles Inc.,” she said, grinning. “All major credit cards accepted.” She leered at Cinderella’s shocked face. “I can get you to that dance in style.”
“And do my chores here while I’m there?” Cindy asked, not wanting her mother to carry out her threat to deplete her precious wardrobe.”
“No problem,” said the Fairy. “I’ll just sub-contract the work to Rumplestiltskin’s Janitorial Service.”
Cinderella whipped out her Master Card and rushed off to get ready while the Fairy used her Square.
Thirty minutes later Prince Charming II watched as a crowd of eligible young women came in. His father demanded that he dance with as many girls as possible, so many different dance partners passed through his arms before he finally settled on an auburn-haired beauty. Cinderella was disgusted, and pulled the Fairy Godmother’s contract out of her handbag, looked at it, and then stormed into the lady’s room where she called the number at the bottom of the bill.
“If you want his attention, it’s an extra three hundred. If you want his love, it’s a solid grand,” said the smug voice at the other end of the line.
“You people really are disgusting,” Cinderella said, even as she agreed to the extra charges.
“You can’t just be sweet and nice anymore, Sweetie,” the Fairy Godmother sniggered. “People just take advantage of you.”
No sooner had the charges been applied, than the Prince dropped his date and started paying attention to Cinderella. She used all her natural charms to accentuate the Fairy’s spell, and by the end of the night she had snagged her man.
A week later, the Prince and Cinderella were married.
A year after that, the Prince divorced her on the grounds of infidelity and a profligate lifestyle. Cinderella hired a sharp lawyer and got a hefty settlement and regular alimony so that she would never have to work another day in her life. It also enabled her to devote the rest of her life to her hobby, being a regular contestant on game shows.
