Oh my goodness, I can sympathize with you so much. When I was your age, I had no back problems at all. But since then, it seems that people in cars like to come and hit me. I have been in several accidents ... none of which were my fault may I add. Anyway, after one that the police officer said was a classic suicide turn, I had to have shoulder surgery. I'm not sure what was worse though .. the surgery or the 12 member jury trail that had to determine how much their insurance company was ripping me off. Anyway, I have been pushed off to the 'pain clinic' too. Unfortunately I didn't find much of what they did that helped my condition. I have to sleep sitting up, and it isn't the easiest thing. So, to make a long story shortish ... the one thing I found that really helps me the most is ... my husband. I know this isn't something you can use to assist you, but maybe the idea will help you. Many years ago after seeing me in so much pain, he started to probe my back, shoulder and side muscles to see what he could find. He indeed found knots that were extremely hard. We found that when he applied pressure to the center of the knots, and kept up the pressure for sometimes 60 to 120 seconds, most of the time the knots would diminish in size. He says it feels like fluid is released out of the knots as he continues the pressure. I have had acupressure from massage therapists, and it never did the type of good his application does. I don't know if you have anyone who could help you find areas that might be inflamed on your back, but it might help. Just don't let them get close to your discs. Those seem to have their own issues right now and don't need to be irritated any more. I hope you can find something that can help to relieve your pain. It is so crippling and disabling. Your far too young to be in such pain. |
Date: 9/18/2015 10:54:00 AM From Authorid: 19092 I know well what you are feeling. I have had 4 back surgeries to do 4 fusions. C3-4, C4-5, and C5-6 are all fused and include metal and screws. C6-7 is ruptured into the spinal fluid, T6-7 has ruptured into the spinal fluid. The 5 discs in between are "moth balled" according to the experts. L4-5 is also fused. As long as my arms, legs, and guts work, then no more surgeries. This year I was diagnosed with an auto immune disorder poly malaysia rheumatica. I've been taking prednisone for about 6 months. Along with treating the auto immune disorder, it has helped my back alot. I also have a open prescription for pain pills. And, I live in Washington so I have gotten my medical card for pot. The pot does help, some. You could move to Washington and we could burn one together...I really dont like the pain pills, lack of energy, tired, slows down your guts...but no other choices. It's better than living in constant pain. |

Date: 9/18/2015 11:59:00 AM From Authorid: 12876 I live in constasnt pain every day, sometimes I cannot walk, but refuse to take pain medicine unless the pain becomes extremely unbearable |
Date: 9/18/2015 6:24:00 PM From Authorid: 54570 I have had chronic back pain since I was fourteen. When its cold I have a sciatic nerve flair up. The rest of the year I have buldging discs at L5 that alternate pain to both hips making it hard to walk fast. Cant run. I am not taking anything for this medicine wise at all. I guess I got used to the pain. There are some days or weeks that there is no pain. There was a surgery that I could get but the price was beyond my income and insurance. But they were gonna insert a silicon "cigarrette butt" in between the vertabrae to keep the pressure off the disc. That was 15 years ago |

Don't go the opiate route. You will take them and then the pain you are in will go away however when you are out of pain meds all together and lets say the doctor decides to cut you off right away with no taper then your pain becomes much worse. It will feels more painful than you really are in because you don't have the pain killer in your body. But I know you said you don't want to go that route anyways, but I just had to say something. I am a recovering opiate/heroin addict and it all started because of my shoulder pain. Back in 2009 where I lost control of my willpower and strength. My suggestion is maybe a chiropractor? If not I would go back to your doctor and talk to them about an alternative. They will work with you especially if you don't want to go the pain med route. Good luck, hope you find some relief soon. You can try icy hot too. |

King Caspian, I surely do use the smoking route and it actually helps a lot! I've been on tramadol for many years and trying to get myself to stop taking them being they aren't working anymore and I'm wanting to try a route that doesn't involve narcotic pain medicine. Not at this point in time. It seems to help a lot! I can smoke and then I get up, clean, and get what I need done!!! I have been wanting to try a chiropractor. I've never really known if it's safe to pop a back with such a pinched nerve but surely they could tell me!! I've heard so many good things with going to a chiropractor. Normally I do the heating pad thing, also, it seems to help a lot! But it's like being caught between a rock and a hard place since the pain is SO bad some days I barely get out of bed but I'm in the process of starting school again so that means a lot of sitting and I can't sit nor stand way too long! I just take it a day at a time. When my husband gets home in eight months, he's soooo going to be rubbing me!! OH how I need it! Thank you guys so much for the comments! |

For chronic pain you might be interested in my post "How to talk to yourself". I had chronic pain from 1984 to 2011. This year 2015 is the first year it's tried to come back. I hope your surgery and your other life supports keep your pain in check. |
