Animal advice please ~Silversnake~

Good morning USM. So I need a little advice for all my animal friendly friends out there.

My husband and I got this beautiful loving cat in November, Sabrina. She is the sweetest cat in the world, but she is afraid of our dog.

She spends majority of her time hiding out in my office (laying on or under the bed) and only comes out if the dog is downstairs, out of sight, or not home. Sabrina and Jynx do not fight, but she does hiss if he comes too close (there have been times I have seen them laying on the bed together- not sure if it's because they don't realize the other is there or what).

My husband insist that since it has been 6 months and this behavior hasn't changed that she is unhappy and scared all the time since she spends majority (75% of the day or more) hanging out in my office near the bed in here and not wandering like our other cat Mika. He said he has talked to co-workers and they all say the cat is miserable and scared and we should give her to a loving home without a dog in it.

He has been trying to talk me into us giving her away to a good family (we find her a home not bring her to a shelter). But everytime he brings it up I cry :( I don't think it's fair to do to her, this is her home. But what if he is right and she is not happy?? I don't know how to tell. When I or my husband are in my office she lays next to me and licks me and purrs. I take that as she is happy here. Right now Jynx is laying on top of the bed and she is hanging out under the bed sleeping and all seems fine.

So USM, I need any advice you can give me on this. I don't want to give one of my "babies" away. But I don't want to be making Sabrina miserable for the rest of her life (I don't know if it matters but she is 5 years old, Jynx and Mika are both 3 years old) Thank you USM for any help

Date: 5/7/2013 5:40:00 AM  From Authorid: 28848    Maybe she is just reclusive in nature. Is she an older cat? She has probably never been around dogs before. Dogs can be pretty unnerving, they're hyper and move around a lot.
Date: 5/7/2013 5:41:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 27705    We don't know much on her history she was a Hurricane Sandy rescue. She is 5 years old
Date: 5/7/2013 5:45:00 AM  From Authorid: 28848    I think sending her off to another home would just cause her more trauma. If she doesn't want to be around the dog, then let her have her space.
Date: 5/7/2013 6:37:00 AM  From Authorid: 15228    I was watching some cat rescue show. What they did with some cats that didn't get along is they set up a barrier, a screen or a gate, animals on either side. They would feed them at the same time on either side of the gate and also get the terrified cat to play while the other cats were on the other side of the gate...I know your other animals are dogs, but maybe you could do something like that?
Date: 5/7/2013 7:38:00 AM  From Authorid: 66331    Sometimes cats just dont like dogs....its their nature lol I think letting her have her own space is a good way to go and maybe try what Kelly suggested, other then that not sure what else you can do. Cats will be cats.
Date: 5/7/2013 8:30:00 AM  From Authorid: 64819    My cousin has cats and a dog inside. The cats don't particularly like the dog, they stay away from him, stay in separate rooms, but they seem happy with their arrangement, the furbabies that is.
Date: 5/7/2013 2:32:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 27705    I am going to make Eric read this and make him see that even though Jynx (dog) and Mika (cat) get along doens't mean that Jynx and Sabrina need to get along
Date: 5/7/2013 4:08:00 PM  From Authorid: 42945    I guess cats are like people, some are friendly and sociable and like to be among other kinds of animals (dogs being one) and others like to be on their own...my sister has 7 cats and two of them steer clear of her dogs and the other cats and these animals all grew up together..those two cats live on the front verandah and the others out the backyard and she has to feed them separately...cats choose people and I guess they choose animals that they want to socialize with also...I wouldn't worry!!
Date: 11/8/2013 8:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 63161    You should watch a few episodes of Jackson Galaxies "My Cat From Hell" show. I know your cat is fine but it shows how you can get your cat to warm up to your dog and how to handle it and make it much better. That way you won't have to get read of your furbaby. Sometimes it takes a little bit to get animals to start liking each other. Just like people, they have to slowly get to know the other, no one just rushes. Good luck!
