How to get information on someone

I am doing a family tree, and there is a mysterious man in the family tree that not a lot of people know about. He is my great great grandfather. I have used ancestry.com and found other family trees with his name on them.. I have contacted them and they have talked to me for a good 10-15 minutes, friendly chit chat about everyone on the family tree, but the second I mention his name they immediately get uneasy, and say they can no longer help me, and either hang up or change the subject very quickly. I have tried asking my grandmother before she passed away about him and she too got very upset saying it was her history, not mine and to stay out of it. I found a cousin of mine on ancestry.com who is also related to my great great grandfather, she asked her family and gotten the same response from them.. I'm wondering what he did that was so bad that no one will talk about him. I do know he died from gunshot wounds to the abdomin back in 1924 around Shiloh, Georgia. Some say he was robbed and killed, others wonder if he was doing the robbing. But even if he was doing the robbing, wouldn't you think someone would have said, oh yes, we had a gangster in the family! A Jesse James wannabe. But no one will discuss him at all. I have searched on Google and found nothing on him, but some information from a death certificate, but nothing to help me find out why he died and what he did for no one to want to talk about him or give me any information on him at all.

Is there any way I can find more information on him? And if so, how?

Thank you very much. (:

Date: 5/29/2012 9:38:00 AM  From Authorid: 27705    if you have his name, where he lived, his date of birth, when he died you should be able to find it in some kind of directory somewhere
Date: 5/29/2012 9:39:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 7849    I have all of that information, and I have found him in directories, in cencus's but nothing on what he did, and why he died.

crimes in Shiloh Georgia back in the 1920s

Date: 5/29/2012 1:18:00 PM  From Authorid: 30747    If you knew where he was born you could get a birth certificate with family info on it. If you knew were he died you might get an andress and start there and work your way back. It's all public record and sometimes you have to pay for the info but it's minimal.
