What good is phone insurance?

I have just bought a new cell phone about four mos ago. Seems my cell phone wasnt indestructible. Lawn mower took it out. Costed me $250. I didnt have my insurance on it then. Matter of fact I had canceled it two weeks prior to its demise. So I had to pay full price for a new one. They were Casio Ravines. Waterproof to 50 feet, able to withstand being submersed in beer, frozen, dropped, taped to football players helmets during a game. Played ice hockey with. Ran over by a tank and still working. Recommended by the Army to thier guys.

Fast forwards to now. I dropped it in a shower at work. 2 1/2 foot fall. The screen spiderwebs and the cracks actually grab facial hair. Not waterproof or resistant anymore. I go through my Verizon store and they tell me to go online to get my replacement. I go there and I am almost at the end of completeing the online claim when the Azurion company (the insurance carrier) informs me that I got to pay $45 to get a new phone. Umm so what good is paying my $9 a month for insurance then?? Thats $108 a year. I am gonna call the number on the card and see what they can tell me.

Are there any suggestions on this or has anyone else had this kinda luck.

Date: 4/3/2012 4:44:00 AM  From Authorid: 64365    Well, I deep-sixed my cell phone into the toilet a few years ago, and when I tried to get it replaced as I had phone insurance I was told I would have to pay 50.00 right then and they would mail the replacement right out to me. I was a little irked by that because I was paying monthly for phone insurance...never got it again.
Date: 4/3/2012 8:14:00 AM  From Authorid: 3680    Phone insurance is crap. Anytime I've had to use it, my phone just happens to be "discontinued" and they give me the previous version. Don't bother with it.
Date: 4/3/2012 8:45:00 AM  From Authorid: 63258    The $45 is your insurance deductable, just like any other insurance policy.
Date: 4/3/2012 8:58:00 AM  From Authorid: 64365    when I first signed on for insurance I wasn't told that there would be deductible...in fact, I was told that the phone would be replaced free of charge if I took out the insurance. The 50 was for shipping and handling, and a new activation fee for the phone since the one I drowned was no longer available. I had to choose one of equal or lesser value. It wasn't a smart phone, but for the price of the insurance per month you would have thought it was lined in gold.
Date: 4/3/2012 10:35:00 AM  From Authorid: 3835    I do not understand the need for a phone that needs insurance in the first place. I just have a simple tracfone. No internet, but it is available to me if desired. I have voicemail, text messaging, call-waiting, speed dial, my choice of certain ring tones, volume control, vibrate mode, and a few other "luxuries"... all that for a ten dollar phone that I just have to buy pre-paid minutes for, that roll over. I have had this phone for nearly 8 years now and it still works fine. I have saved quite a large sum of money with this phone, and still have a way to connect with friends and family when needed... it is just not some fancy phone that I can show off or brag about is all, Lol..
Date: 4/3/2012 10:47:00 AM  From Authorid: 64819    His phone isn't that "fancy" but he requires one that can take the abuse.
Date: 4/3/2012 2:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 64819    It's good for $97.00
Date: 4/3/2012 4:49:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 54570    It has been dropped in a pigpen and the little piggies beat and ate it for about thirty minutes one day before I noticed it was gone. All I did was pick it up and wash it in the sink. gave it a good scrubbing. Never shut it off. Thats a tough phone!

Date: 4/3/2012 6:33:00 PM  From Authorid: 16916    Souldrifter says I quack like a duck! QUACK!
Date: 4/3/2012 6:49:00 PM  From Authorid: 16916    That is pretty standard (my deductible is 100.00) It's so people don't make excessive claims, I guess. I understand your dilemma, but they won't do anything to help you. You are stuck paying the deductible. I don't believe there are any other insurance companies except the on that the carrier offers (which is Asurion in most cases). The only exception I know of is Apple and instead of purchasing the carrier's insurance, you spend 100.00 for Apple's insurance and it covers everything except if it's lost or stolen.
