Internet speak versus real-world writing...........Krista the Instigator

Heya, USM. Long time-no see! Well, Let's get straight to business.

When you chat on the internet, do you use the same type of writing as you would when in school doing an essay or even casual homework (for lack of better example... oh Lord)? I ask a lot of my peers this question, and seeing as most of them are teenagers (around fourteen or fifteen), and most of them say, in their terms, "ugh lol no i write like dis bc its eezier y dont u".

I generally write the same across the board, from doing an essay to writing a message on an online forum. I personally think that always being meticulous when writing will improve your style and grammar even when it doesn't have to be completely correct. Besides, I always get uneasy when I spell something wrong or if my grammar is a total trainwreck (much like that of my peers, actually!) because it looks like I'm not fourteen, but seven, and it looks as though I haven't been educated properly.

I really don't understand the excuse "well typing lyk dis is eezie rite", because for me, it's not. It takes me ages to intentionally mess something up--that phrase alone took me thirty seconds of staring at the keyboard, recalling how too many of my peers type. It doesn't take too much longer to type out "you" instead of "u" and typing an extra few vowels and here and there really isn't so hard, in my opinion. I understand a few spelling mistakes here and there, but if you're old enough to be on the Internet or on Facebook, then you're probably old enough to spell well enough that your writing is legible.

Anyway, here's my point: do you type as if you were writing an essay, or do you use "text-talk" and colloquialisms?

Looove,

"Dang it, I was offensive again" Krista

Date: 6/27/2011 10:30:00 PM  From Authorid: 52489    When I'm teaching, I run into this all the time: students who use "text-talk", acronyms, etc. They think they're being cool, but they're hurting themselves.

When I assign an essay, I always put on the board and at the top of the assignment a warning that any text-talk or lack of punctuation will be a loss of points. Sometimes the students accuse me of "not being cool" or not "getting with the program", or some such thing. My answer is as follows, "English has rules, and these rules define who you are. I was a businessman for 14 years, and if you turn in an application to me that reads 'I lyk yer store its cool.', I'm going to throw your application in the trash, because I don't think you're educated." English has used punctuation for hundreds of years; personal computers are barely 30 years old.

>do you type as if you were writing an essay,
>or do you use "text-talk" and colloquialisms?

I always use punctuation, not only because it is second nature to me, but also because I intend to set an example.

Date: 6/27/2011 10:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 2335    I just remind people that hundreds of thousands died in World War II so that they could have the right to butcher the English language like that, rather than the German language. I've actually shut quite a few people up.
Date: 6/27/2011 11:09:00 PM  From Authorid: 64819    I don't like text talk. It's hard for me to read, even when I text, I spell it out properly.
Date: 6/28/2011 1:04:00 AM  From Authorid: 61966    I don't like "text" talk, even when sending a text..I spell out all the words. It's alright with me if it takes 2 separate messages. When I'm typing online, I try to use proper english. Grammer was never my thing so my commas are never in the perfect place and I may have run-on sentences but at least it's english!
Date: 6/28/2011 2:28:00 AM  From Authorid: 27705    i use mostly "real world writing" outside of LoL
Date: 6/28/2011 7:47:00 AM  From Authorid: 53054    I must admit I use (u) instead of you, and that is about it. I would prefer to write the word out correctly.
Date: 6/28/2011 11:54:00 AM  From Authorid: 61946    I usually type the same on everything...probably because I have a problem with things being misspelled.
Date: 6/29/2011 1:11:00 PM  From Authorid: 14314    It really annoys me when I see people typing like that, I see that in Facebook alot. It´s hard to read, it´s really annoying, but sadly alot of people write like that. God Bless
